Well when i saw your forum title hs vs gg i thought you were referring to horse sh** so.... If the game isn't good i will usually just say 'thank you'
hs vs gg

Generally the loser says gg, if you announce your victory is close you may get a nosebleed (for having your nose so high in the air).

Chess.com should create an icon to represent a handshake. We can then use it and everyone will know what it means.
hs is more offensive, imo I'm afraid to shake hands with people after reading that most people do not wash hands after using the toilet, might I suggest "whhs" (wash hands hand shake)

+1

"Thanks" after winning a chess game makes it seem as if you are thanking them for losing, not for playing.
I think gg is slightly better, but it is more polite to let the loser say "gg" first.
Otherwise, think of something else because "hs" is not a nice alternative.

ok, you see, I always stuck with 'gg' as the internet alternative for the handshake. If one is playing OTB then handshanking, and thanking the guy for the game is just basic good manners even if the game has gone badly for you. So, 'gg' was, in my understanding the internet shorthand for this.
People do get upset my this, as they take it as a claim that the game was of a good quality, which it isnt....
Perhaps I'm move onto the handshake icon!
After much discussion about if one should say 'gg' after a game, or if it is offensive if the game wasn't good etc, I have taken to saying hs (handshake) instead.
Mainly, this confuses people, or they think its some form of insult.....ow well..
