In a Kasparov-Karpov game. Karpov claims Kasparov announced knight by promotion. Of course, there is no other witness so his claim was dismissed by the arbiter.

Bong, that's not what happened at all. Kasparov pushed his pawn to the 8th rank and then without bothering to replace it with a queen he hit Karpov's clock. Karpov made the claim that since Gary didn't make it a queen he was calling it a piece. Sounds like a valid claim to me. You shouldn't have to tolerate any bs on your own clock time.

Games like that of OP prove one should not resign early.the opponent could make a wrong move, wrong promotion or even click resign by mistake or become suddenly busy and abandon the game.
