I found a chess set...

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and registered a user with the explicit purpose of trying to determine the value of a chess set I found at home. I know how to play but I've never been a great player, thing is, I was cleaning house and found an old wood chess set made of what seems to be handcrafted wood pieces resembling chinese. The board itself has two drawers, one for each colour and it folds on itself to take the aspect of a suitcase or something like that. The white squares in the board have drawings with chinese or something like that... I'll try to post some pictures, I'm interested in knowing if it's valuable or just a normal chess set.

I've seen these on Ebay for around $150 new.  Not an antique; made to look old.  Still a reasonably unique set, so enjoy it!

Conflagration_Planet

You just found it at home, and have no idea where it came from?

PerfectRlz

Hahaha! Yeah I found it at home... kinda creepy isn't it... thanks for the ebay reference, do you know how can I look for it? I've tried chinese chess set but couldn't find anything like it... once again thanks for your input! :D

I had a set much like this. It was Korean, and just another set.

Well. . .you have a beautiful investigation case, sort of Ellery Queen.

To stsrt out with, I think that the box is more valuable than the pieces, assuming it is a real Chinese chess set. That "box", rather than a chess board, is a chess table.

First with the investigtion, Try to find out who was the owner,--- who lived in that house before---were they relative of yours-- -compare with other "old" things" that wee there with the chess set-- - ask your faminy relatives, neighbors etc- - -. How I envy you in this matter, , , Knowing (approx) the age of his original owner when he bought the set would help a lot. . .

Now about the box and the chess

It looks like the carving of the pieces was a "rough", simple, carving. Much like this modern abstract (Dali) art so favoured today., , , if it was not machine carved. . . Real chinese hand carved figures are nade out of bone or ivory, If the pieces are light in weight, they are either bone or wood. Unless it is a rather modern set made out of sintetics imitating wood.

Now, about the box. It looks like it has a glassy cover forming the chess board. That is typical chinese. . . and they are really good at that.. Check the assembly of the box, Older chinese boxes do not have nails or similar joiners.

If the box (chess table) is really hand made it can easily be over de $200, provided the squares are at least 1.5x1.5 inches (For s chaes set #5).

All I said is assuming that the set was made before China becoming comunist, because now, according to Mao´s theories, old things are good for nothing and should be dsispossed off. Moer comunist chinese things are machine made always trying to rob the coustomer.

That is a neat old find.  I wish I could find treasures like that in my house.

Same story here! Researching to find info on my set, remarkably similar with slight less carved detail (more chunky) but same box carvings & style without Chinese detailing on white. Have hauled this set around (3 countries) for 30+ years as was parents' who rcvd it in USA from Army-based friends in 60s.

Box DOES have tiny sticky label: Made in Taiwan Republic of China. No other I.D. Want to sell it and looking for good Intnat'l Chess site to drive interest. Will post worldwide. Any help/suggestions appreciated. Reply here or direct to karenrob@gmail.com
