I have a set somewhere with Japanese characters made from the same stuff. The thing about moulding is that it is fairly quick to make regardless of the amount of detail. So just because it is intricate doesn't mean it is expensive or unique . Perhaps yours is unique ,I don't want to guess a value from a photo but there are such sets around.Take it to a jeweler they are good at telling materials apart and will probably be able to tell you exactly what it is made of.
I found a very old looking chess set...
Maybe the board was inspired by this one
http://crumiller.com/chess/chess_pages/boards/pen_and_ink_board.htm
it is made from crushed rocks that are bound by resin (usually a 2 part dyed epoxy that hardens when it cures) and cast in a mold form. if you google something like "mayan resin chess set" you can see quite a few sets similar to this for $50 to $200 etc. they use this technique with quite a few other types of decorative objects. usually produced in china, india or central/south america. not very playable but nice to display and look at--they did after all take some trouble with the details and diversity of the pieces and board squares. hope you did not pay too much for it.
This page will help with value
Thanks it does help. I saw some very similar sets on there.

Thanks a lot for all the info. Very helpful. No I didn't pay anything for it. It was basically passed down to me.
Thanks everyone for all the comments and feedback. It has been extremely helpful. If anyone comes across any other information at all I'd appreciate it. It seems the worth is probably somewhere around $150-$200 based on the comments in this thread but I'll keep looking. Thanks.
I just stumbled on this set. This person believes the pieces are stone. It doesn't seem like the person is very sure about it though. The pieces look similar to mine and the set itself looks pretty similar as well. In case anyone wants to take a look heres a link:

The sets I seem to be finding that are most similar to mine seem to be valued at around $500. This one here is very similar to mine. The rook seems like it may even be identical.

You might want to check Ebay as well. I did a search for "Mayan" in the chess section and came up with a dozen listings. Several were for boards only and others were crudely carved stone but 2 or 3 looked very similar to yours. Somewhere around $350 for the nicest one.

Yea i searched aztec chess set and came up with one or two that looked similar to mine. The most similar was priced at 400 but it seems the person may have over priced it. Still searching though. Thanks a lot.
It appears as though the value could be anywhere from $1-$1,000,000.
Wow really? That gives me a ton of hope. Thanks.
Edit: I'm aware sarcasm doesn't translate very well online.

They look amazing.....I like them! Take good care of them if you keep them.....if not....good luck selling it

Thank you! And if I do, I will ;)
I remember reading about a Society of people who have the hobby of collecting Chess sets that are unusual but I've forgotten the name of this club. There was a writeup on this Society a couple of years back in Chess Life Mag. Maybe try googling it as those people in that club should know more about the beautiful type of set that you have there.
