 Hi All,

I am a middle aged chess fan, I only play for fun and passion for the game. I have always had and still, the problem of losing most of Blitz games ( basically any time under 10minutes/game ) on time. This is becoming very annoying... specially with a strike loses in a winning positions. I know time is a part of the game, any useful advices to improve this part of my game?? Any others have the same problem??

Move faster.

Choose longer time controls

play with increments

Play some bullet games, then you will be able to manage time better in blitz

You should study the theory of the openings you play and the general ideas behind them, so that when you're playing a game and you chose an opening you already know what to do, how to do it, and you should do it fast. Also try calculating pawn endgames and do combinations of 3-5 moves regularly, preferably daily, so that you can improve and speed up your thinking abilities.

Hope it helps, best of luck!

Often in 5 min games if I am unsure of what to move, I will play a move that complicates the position, so that my opponent is also (hopefully) unsure of what to move. I call this a thinking move, because we both take a half-minute to work it out (on my opponent's time though!). Of course this risks that a good line for my opponent will come out of it.

Think when it is not your turn. You don't have to make complicated moves for it.

Well you see, sometimes in blitz when my opponents have an obvious line to play, they actually play it right away instead of giving me plenty of time to implement my strategies. I know it's horribly unfair and rude, but one must adapt.

Thanks all for your replys.... after all, I think I just have to force myself to move faster, may be trying to play bullet worth a try...  I mean Blitz after Bullet should sound better at least, time wise lol

Deranged

This.

I used to play 5 minute games and ALWAYS run short on time, then I started playing bullet (1 minute games) and a few weeks later I came back to 3 minute games and I never had any time pressure on me.

You should pay more attention to the clock.  Get in the habit of checking your time after few moves until you develop a sense for about how much time you have.  Also pay attention to the opponent's rate of play.  If they are only taking 20-30 seconds then you shouldn't be taking minutes.

Or, if you find yourself really enjoying the positions and trying hard to work them out to find best moves, then play with a longer time control :)  No sense in rushing something if you have a pace that you enjoy.

Thanks again to all, I will try out the bullet games; and would once come back to let others know, what was the result, later.....

What a disgusting strategy. Winning on time is as meaningful as playing against a beginner. This Show where is value of chess is.
