I just spent €300 on books and such...BOOKS!

If I don't become at least a World Championship challenger after that, I'll be a very disappointed man

Conflagration_Planet

I just bought some books on physics, so I hope to win the Nobel Prize.

Books?  Aren't they those things that are like websites that you can hold in your hand, but they don't have clickable links?

Duh...you have to buy the movies too (you won't win an oscar though)

Skwerly

not likely going to happen, but congrats on all the books.  :)

have spent $ 1200 on chess books.... No regret..... and I dont want become even a GM ! Just pure love.....
aidin299
Great point ! Dont buy any opening books devoted to specific branches ....till you be a master ! I have no such a book :-)
fburton

Me neither. Well, actually, that's a lie - I bought "Starting Out: The Scandinavian" because I had seen some games with that opening and thought it suited my 'chess temperament'. But apart from that, I have a few general openings books, like:

Back to Basics: Openings (ChessCafe Back to Basics Chess)

Basman's Chess Openings (secondhand book)

FCO - Fundamental Chess Openings

aidin299
good books , good selection fburton , as always . What's your opinion about N.C.O ?
fburton

I don't have NCO (yet). To be honest, it's not my idea of a good read - and if I wanted to research a particular opening, I would probably use a database. The great thing about FCO, for me anyway, is the way the moves are explained.

aidin299
I agree with you on FCO and have it. but I have heard from some chess experts that there are some great and unique secrets of variouse opening ideas hindered in NCO.

Brilliantboy, how many books will 300 pounds buy nowdays ?  Why not list the books and lets us give you a grade point average for your purchase. You know---if we judge you did well you get an A if not you get a B or C.

Not that you really care what we think but we can kill a few minutes here. Thats basically what chess is---killing a few minutes here and there.

About 2 or 3 more than €300 will...

Bearing in mind the topic is from January and seeing as I've added to my "library" since, I can't recall the exact list. This is more or less it:

My Great Predecessors Vol. 1-5

The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal

Zurich 1953

The Career and Complete Games of Fischer - Mueller

Nunn's Puzzle Book

Chess for Zebras

Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual

Understanding Chess Move by Move - Nunn

How to Choose a Chess Move - Soltis

The Improving Annotator - Heisman

How to Beat Your Dad at Chess (I haven't read this one yet...I'm saving the most difficult for last)

Even reading one page of a good selected chess book is very inspiring for me. so I dont regret buying those Great treasure ! another point is that I'm very seriouse in absorbing the main ideas and applying them well in my games. After every flaw or mistake in my games finally i refer to my books to address that specific error. examining my thought process and then writting down a Conclusion . This method has worked for me a lot and I enjoy it. The main advantage of possessing plenty of chess books is that each time you can find a valuable guide , tip , hint , instruction or example which can exactly addresses your problem. and your weaknesses. Despite that , reading the complex chess consepts and viewing them from different angles of multiple Authors , always has been a fascinating work for me.
