You don't think pawns should be able to take other pawns with disregard for a two-square jump? Or you think that ALL pieces should enjoy the same ability?

Former. It's a damn stupid rule. Don't remind me how, when I was rated 1400, I lost that 3 pawn up endgame against an 800 player because of En Passant.
The two-square pawn move does affect opening theory, even with en passant (just look at the start position of the French Defense: after 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5, it's White to move, but if pawns can only move one square it's 1. e3 e6 2. e4 d6 3. d3 d5 4. d4 and it's Black to move after almost twice as long--so maybe speeding up the game with the two-move rule is a good idea).
