I used o play chess all the time! I was good and I bet a lot of people, I once beat my teacher by a checkmate. Anyways I stopped playing for a good 3 years and now I'm terrible :/

What do you mean with good? You are a beginner, and once you was a beginner who bet a lot of beginners... Right?

I mean I was good....I don't know how to describe how good but it wasn't like "oh my she can beat everyone at this game," no I only beat my teacher once and yeah

There are different levels to being good.

It often starts out being the best in your family or class or school.

Then, if the person is still interested, they go online, join a real life club, or even go to OTB tournaments (over the board).

And now this person is playing others who beat all their friends and family too, and so they discover there's a big wide world of chess out there, and that they're not quite as good as they thought wink.png

But also taking a break makes a big difference. If I didn't play for a week I'd feel a little rusty. You didn't play for 3 years!

This is basically my story. I learned how all of the pieces moved in elementary school and I even beat my teachers in chess, but I had no idea that there were even such a thing as chess tournaments. I was beating teachers (they were not letting me win) and was the best in my small school, but even then I only played maybe a game every month or so if that. If I could guess my rating when I was in elementary school, I'd say maybe around 800 (really, not just saying that because it is close to yours - that really would be my skill level guess)!

Years later, I decided that I would try to take up chess again to see just "how good" I really was. The day I decided to take up chess as a challenge was the day I created my chess.com account; that was about one year ago and I've learned just how little I really knew. Although I have improved greatly since my account creation, I will say that I am dedicated to anything I set my mind to just as my natural personality and chess was no exception; I am glad with my improvement rate, but I immersed myself in all the chess learning I could come across and chess-related-study/practice in a lot of my free time. After one year, I am still trying to improve - but I am just curious to see how far I can go (I have no real desire to be a GM, just a desire to challenge myself). If you are like me, then you will probably be at chess for a while too happy.png
