I want to buy a chess set

House of Staunton (HoS) is an excellent, reputable online chess store...
http://www.houseofstaunton.com/?acc=c52f1bd66cc19d05628bd8bf27af3ad6&___store=houseofstaunton_en
Note that House of Staunton currently has a holiday 20% discount valid through midnight (USA central time zone) on Monday December 19. Use coupon code GIFT at checkout to receive the discount.
https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/house-of-staunton---20-discount
also...
The Chess Store...(they offer a 10% discount at checkout, and are typically less expensive for shipping charge than HoS)....
Both of these stores offer very good quality chess sets, and good service.
I would advise to compare the prices and shipping charges, for both stores, for each of the products you are interested in.
Also be aware, when choosing a chess board....
The optimum relationship of board square size and pieces, is...
King base diameter / Square Size = 0.75
For example, for a board with 2 inch squares, the optimum King base diameter would be approximately 1.5 inches.
If a high quality "solid wood" (as opposed to "verneer") chess board is of interest to you, check out my post #1 in the following thread relating to Drueke and JLP solid wood chess boards....

Finally, from a historical point of view, I think this set is interesting....it is currently on clearance sale at HoS (thus, not eligible for coupon discount)...Fischer-Spassky Commemorative set...ebonized boxwood, 3.75 inch King...nice!

Here someone posted photos of the genuine ebony (more expensive!) version of the same set....I'm not certain if this set is available now...it appears that this person may have purchased the last remaining set (#40 of 40 made)....

Good Luck to you!

I would like to add the Chess Bazaar to your list for wooden chess sets. They have a nice selection of sets available at the very competitive prices. I presently own two of their sets. Vik & Sapna are pleasure to deal with.

I cannot recommend HOS due to their huge shipment fees and very high prices.

http://www.houseofstaunton.com and http://www.chessbazaar.com/ are at both the best at their extreme i guess and both have good stuff. Both are trustworthy however in my opinion. HOS is expensive but high quality and ChessBazaar cheap and still good quality. On the high end chess paraphernalia I like https://thechessstore.com/ as well. Regarding boards i like http://mtmwood.com/en/chessboards.php and all the other sites named above allow to buy chess boards as well as pieces.

To say that HoS is expensive and ChessBazaar is cheap is a generalization. Best to compare prices on a case by case basis. HoS is located in USA. ChessBazaar is located in India. MTM Wood is located in Russia.

Sorry for the late reply, Cgjdfhh. I've been obscenely busy with work the past few days, and its getting worse before it will get better. (Hmm, that name could be a little hard to pronounce. Mind if we call you Cgjdfh for short?)
I'm not going to add to your growing list of links and resources to check out, because you've already got quite a few. More important, RussBell has already linked you to one of several threads in this forum about this topic. Rest assured, this sort of question does come up time and again, and most of the answers lie in the dark misty past. (Doesn't this sound like the intro to a vampyre film?) My best advice is Take Your Time before you make a decision. Look around this forum and see some of the sets displayed. As many as you can stand to look at. You'll get a good feel for what you want or don't by looking at all the various sets you can find on this thread. Then you can start to shop for what you like and what you can afford. Rest assured, you're in good company here, and you can't go wrong.
Very good advice!

Is there I difference between the Fischer-Spassky and Reykjavik II sets from HOS?
I don't own either of those sets. But I have carefully examined the photos of both on the HoS website. The sets appear very similar to each other, in design, craftsmanship and price - with the exception that the Fischer-Spassky set is currently on sale. I would say, with the exception of the current prices, it's a toss-up, and a matter of personal preference.

At the risk of clarifying the obvious - I find that a quick way to gain an appreciation of the relative quality of sets is to compare the Knights - their design, and especially the craftsmanship (carving)...!

Of possible interest....a couple of sets which I purchased (in ebonized boxwood) from The Chess Store....I think are nice ...the "Exclusive Staunton" and the "Fierce Knight" sets....

Dude, this is a Chess Equipment discussion forum. You know, we talk about Chess equipment here.
Chess equipment, do you know what that means?
It means Chess sets, boards, clocks and other things like it.
So, if you don't want to read about Chess sets and the like, kindly don't come to this forum to read...

There are good tournament standard sets on USCF website so that you can use in tournaments. If you want different kind of sets for at home such as cat vs dog, cops vs robbers, etc... there are several different places you can get those sets. I have seen them in few stores. They can be expenisive! Also, you can find them online. Just don't buy taxidermy mice set. It's plain creepy using real, dead mice.
I come from China, i want to buy a chess set from west country. Who can help me and i would pay for it. Thank you very much
