Ideal Representation of Chess in the mind

I started playing chess long ago over the board and turned to online chess after a significant period of time. As a result, I am used to imagining the chess position in 3 dimensions (as on a physical board) in my mind. This is very tiring and difficult to maintain when I try to play blindfold. Is it benefical to imagine a 2D representation of the chess position? Will it improve the depth of analysis and be less tiring? I would like to know how different players imagine chess positions in their minds and if there is advice available from experts in this regard.

My guess is blinfolded players imagine lines of action and relationships between pieces more than a physical representation, but I'm not sure.
