Ideas for handicaps

Unlike Go, there's no completely reasonable way for a much stronger player to give a handicap to a weaker player that doesn't radically change the nature of the game, such as starting with one or more pieces less. But there are other, perhaps less serious, options to give a handicap. Sometimes when grandmasters play on twitch stream, they might do things like these the even the odds a bit. Just some ideas, from least to most challenging (choose one or more of these):

  1. Time odds. (A bit boring, but hey, it has the least amount of effect on the gameplay itself.)
  2. You are forbidden from castling.
  3. Your second move must be a king move.
  4. You must repeat your starting position at some point in the game.
  5. You must repeat your starting position at some point in the game, but it cannot be on your second move.
  6. You must get two same-colored bishops.
  7. If you can move a pawn, you must.

Cool story.

Time is the only handicap necessary. I can beat Carlsen if he’s given five seconds with no increment and I’m given an hour.

I can give handicap to Magnus Carlsen and win. The handicap is that I will play without the king. That way, he will never be able to checkmate me.

Hello,

I am playing handicap games often with my son. We are using two methods:

1. Material. One handicap - one pawn, two handicap - two pawns, etc... I am using this tool: https://malaschitz.github.io/handicapchess/dist/ and black player must use this random position. Great for blitz games.

2. Computer assistance handicap. Weak player has white pieces and has one token on start of game. After every (3,4,5.... etc - this is level of handicap) he get one token more. Instead of move, player can stop clock, spend one token and move will be  played according to computer. Is important do not see variant or value of position !
