If Magnus Carlsen is so great , then why couldn't he not win a single World cup event !?

Out of so many tries he could not win a single World Cup no matter how much he tried or how hard he tried. Why do you think that?

Recently he said he doesn't want long preparation and just facing one player , he wants verity, yet he can't handle a World Cup with different opponents.

Magnus Carlsen has won as many world cups (0) as me (0).

The World Cup is very hard to win. You need a little luck.

MVL didn't win it in 2018 despite not losing a single game (he was knocked out by Aronian in an armageddon playoff where Aronian won if it was a draw).

At least he was in the finals! Magnus never reached finals, during his entire career.

And Magnus best player in History?  That needs luck to win an event, that many others won !? Hmm mm. ...

Cant draw much conclusion looking at just one competition. No matter how good you are, likely there are some competitions you dont win despite many attempts.

Do you even know what you are talking about?

assassin3752

So does a newbie who only barely learns how to move pieces and pawns!

If it's anything like other competitions sometimes unforeseen events can unexpectedly happen. During other recent competitions some people who were fully capable and willing to compete were disqualified or forfeited through things like positive covid tests. So if a really good competitor is eliminated for something other than poor performance it seems like that could throw the whole pairing system off.

Any given player could lose to someone who otherwise wouldn't even be there (because their presence is only because someone who would have beat them wasn't there). Or like you said, luck.

I don't know the purpose of the chess world cup, but it seems like there is some correlation to qualifying for the world championship. Which as world champion, he would not need to do.

Magnus is human. He loses games, just like everyone.

With single-elimination tournaments, even the world's best player can get eliminated sometimes.

If he were so dominant that he never lost a single game, ever? He probably would quit chess, out of complete boredom.

Good point.  So let's weigh some things.

On the one hand:

- Won five straight world championship matches, losing a total of only two games between them

- Went 125 straight games without a loss -- a good 25% more than the previous world record -- against the strongest players in the world

- Won the World Blitz championship five times and the World Rapid Championship three times.

- Has been #1 in on the ratings list for more than eleven years without interruption, usually by a fairly wide margin.

- Has won tournament after tournament for years, to the point where it's only a surprise when someone else wins.

On the other hand:

- Played these three atrocious World Cups:

2007: +6 -1 =5 in classical, +2-0 in tiebreaks

2017: +4-1=1 in classical, no tiebreaks

2021: +8-0=6 in classical, +4 -2 =4 in tiebreaks

For a godawful total of FOUR hideous losses to set against a mere twenty-four wins.  It's downright ignominious.

So I guess it's time to weigh those two.  And the verdict is clear.  Putting all those pros and cons together, one can only arrive at one conclusion: the guy is an utter bozo.

I don't think Magnus can handle the pressure of the world cup

cokezerochess22

I saw him lose a game once what a noob that magnus is.  I personally think gotham chess is better don't see him losing any world cups now do you!

Yes! The top 2 finishers of the world cup just qualify for the candidates! Far from becoming even the challenger for the World champion!

You could be right. But that's still one reason that wouldn't provide any appeal to him.

Plus, I don't understand the original question. He's asking why Carlsen won a single world cup. But it appears he never won, so the question doesn't make sense.

Magnus stepped down only because he just realized this. He thanks you for your service

You would say "two" (2017, 2021) if you cared to search, or if your intention was not trolling a thread.

He did not play in any other World Cup event.

What I said was common sense

He never won a Formula-1 race, either!

infinitexinfinite

"Why couldn't he not win" is asking why he could win. He could win because he has the ability to do so. There is also no luck in a game of chess.
