If the game chess itself was a company how much do you think it would be worth?

Chess.com is simply a platform to play chess on. It has value, just like a back room where poker is played has value.

I think the question was if the game of chess was a company, would it have value. I don't think the question could possibly include all venues where the game is played. If someone "owned" backgammon they are not entitled to a cut if the game is played in my living room. Or any other venue. The venues operate outside the confines of the game itself. If someone owned checkers they are not entitled to compensation for checkers tournaments. The game of checkers, like chess, has basically no value.

We can make the assumption that chess somehow falls outside the limitations of intellectual property and copyright law. But that's a silly assumption. I'm trying to think of a good analogy. Maybe Sudoku. You cannot copyright, patent, or incorporate the control of other people playing those games. You could probably copyright certain chess puzzles, some soduko solutions, etc. You can certainly own a company that makes those games. You can even own the venue, like a house, a tournament hall, or chess.com. But nobody can "own" the game itself.

Making the assumption chess could be owned is like the assumption of how many angels can fit on the head of a pin. You can do it, but the assumption has no meaning, no real conversational value.
