is it illegal to create a user name with a GM in front of it; if you are not a GM? Certainly morally appalling. 

Not at all, but why would you want to pretend to be a GM...don't you have a more exciting life than just playing chess?

I don't think there's a law forbidding it. It's just a very silly things to do, usually people with either delusions of grandeur, or those who are just a bit thick.

Not illlegal; the site rules allow this, as long as the profile does create an impression of impersonating an actual GM.

I think it's a great idea! Then, when you do acquire GM status, you won't need to change user names. Way to think ahead!

No. I've seen at least 1 person who had GM in their username, but it was in blue.People that are legit GMs have the "G" and "M" in bold, red, capital letters. Also you have to submit a form to Chess.com to be approved as a legit GM and have the title in front of their name.

I would never do a fake GM. A fake kaynight account maybe, but not a GM.
