IM Levy weighs in on cheating

David Neil Laurence Levy (born 14.03.45 in London), is a Scottish International Master of chess, a businessman noted for his involvement with computer chess and artificial intelligence, and the founder of the Computer Olympiads and the Mind Sports Olympiads. He has written more than 40 books on chess and computers.

Beginning in 1968, Levy made a famous bet with four Artificial Intelligence (AI) luminaries, ultimately totaling 1,250 British pounds, that no computer program would win a chess match against him within ten years. He won this bet and offered $1,000 to the author(s) of the first program to beat him in a 4 or 6-game match. USCF added $4,000 to the purse and in 1989 the chess program Deep Thought defeated Levy to win the prize. SOURCEhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Levy_(chess_player)

Here are his thoughts on the issue of (computer-assisted) cheating in chess

thank you again for your sharing Cool

epoqueepique  What's up with that (bad word deleted) avatar? I want you to bring the old one back!

This has absolutely nothing directly to do with your article above, but it may be of interest to know that David Levy was married for 17 years to Jacqueline Keene, GM Raymond Keene's sister.  After divorcing David Levy, Jackie married Richard Eales, the author of one of the best, in my opinion, chess history books ever written (it examines the popularity of chess through time), "Chess: A History of a Game."  Mrs. Eales is no lightweight, as she is Dr. Jacqueline Eales, professor of Early Modern History at Canterbury Christ Church University.  David Levy and Raymond Keene co-authored some chess books but had a serious falling out after Levy accused Keene of some financial improprieties.

Yeah I've read about Levy and Keene and according to what I read Keene is a real sleazebag who has jerked over relatives and (formerly) close friends with apparently no qualms, and in some cases for a lot more than just "chump change." If you're innarested just look him up in Edward Winters "Chess Notes."  He makes Matulovic and Ivanov (the cheater) look like saints by comparison. One of the many sad parts about Keene is that he was not only a respectably strong GM in his heyday but he also authored several well-regarded chess books prior to  becoming a sleazy crook and shlockmeister purveyor of crappy and/or plagaized chess books.

Seperated at birth? GM Keene and Batman Villian "The Penguin"

Nimzo I read your comment as an order more than a wish, so I changed it back. My face had become all flat due to the bug on the site and did not revert to normal when the bug was fixed for everybody else. Also, I found dealing with people is easier here when they don't know I am a woman :)

epoqueepique

Please order me to change it back to the manuscript !

NimzoRoy

epoqueepique I didn't expect you to take me seriously but thanks anyway! Can't you find another image or photo that looks better or dink around in photoshop or Paint.net to get a tan or something in the current image? BTW you should use whatever avatar you want to, don't mind me, no one else does!

If it's any consolation you look way better as a pale face than GM Keene does in living color - but it's hard to compete with Burgess Meredith when it comes to that sauve, sophisticated air of elegance about him...

TetsuoShima

btw nimzo can you shed some led on history. Like where Bronstein was crying about Keene saying Botvinnik was always better than Bronstein.

Bronstein said it was totally untrue because he already won against him before the title match. Do you know anything about that part of history??

NimzoRoy

If true I'm guessing the Bronstein info may come from one of his books. I never heard any of this which only means I  never heard (well read actually) about any of this. You can try looking it up using the archives search at www.chesshistory.com, a very reliable source of chess history that separates  the myths, fables, fairy tales and rumors from actually verifiable facts.

TetsuoShima

my english is not so good, so i formulated it wrong. Yes i read about it in his book, i think it was sorcerers apprentice. I just wanted to know whats your take on it, but because you havent heard of it, its hard to tell ;)

anyway thank you very much for the link.

Maybe if he had offered $100 000 it would have had some real influence. But IA is not that easy to make.

epoqueepique

Thanks nimzo !, a pertinent comparison indeed.
