Queen of Katwe opens Friday, Sept. 23.

This PG biographical drama from Disney and ESPN Films stars David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o, and follows the story of real-life Ugandan chess player Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga), who rose from poverty to become a world chess champion.

Never heard of a woman Ugandian chess player that has been WC(world champion). I think I would know about this remarkable fact since the odds are too low because she is a Woman and she is Ugandian

I do not know what the movie says.  but she did not become WC, obviously.

she was at the most recent olympiad, though.  and her story is inspirational- an escape from poverty from a very destitute place.

and perhaps a reminder that a lot of potential talent is hidden and undeveloped due to poverty.

Merovwig

3 times junior girl champion of Uganda according to Wikipedia (English page) and according to FIDE website she is 1622 elo and... Woman candidate master (woman candidate, not world champion).

I read she was awarded the WCM thanks to her score in the 40th chess Olympiad. If you want to see her score, go on this page, and ctrl+f her name to find her in the list...

I'll bet I'm the world chess champion of my block. It's all how you define things. Laughing

Is it released here, Pablito?

thegreat_patzer

oh.  WC = "women candidate master?"

I thought that was WCM?

Pablo has his own kind of trolling, always with the scent of a recent lobotomy.

Disney is boring, and apparently it is now dumb too.

I'm excited about the movie since it's about chess, and Disney usually does a great job. The trailer almost made me cry, but her actual rating was definitely a bit of a letdown. Surely someone can get her some lessons and get her to a Class A player at least!

Please, tell me you did not watch the last Star Wars movie before saying that. ;)

It is a cool remake.

Ok let me explain to those who don't know.  If you score >= (greater than or equal to) 50% in a FIDE rated tournament among your peers your federation can apply and you are automatically given a title, in this instance WCM (woman candidate master)

Direct title (automatic title) is a title gained by achieving a certain place or result in a tournament. For example, winning, or achieving a result ≥50 percent in a tournament. On application by the player’s federation and confirmation by the QC, such titles are awarded automatically by FIDE.
