Agreed, it does give the game some great atmosphere to use a nice, heavy, wood set. It's quite condusive to concentration. Also, the positions "pop" more, which I think allows you to evaluate more quickly.
Importance of chess pieces...

Who used to say this? Some master, maybe one of Brian Wall's: "Plastic pieces, plastic moves"
As for me, I don't like anything too fancy. Your average tournament set works fine for me.

you might be right but every person has its own psychology ...i was giving my point to view to add some positiveness to game ......

you might be right too, but every person has its own psychology and I was just adding mine for others to see as well.

I did remember a master who agreed with you though. He felt like when he played on poor boards his moves weren't as good. And on a good board he had more creativity and a better mood.
That's what I meant by quoting "plastic pieces, plastic moves" He preferred wooden boards and pieces that looked nice.

yes ..... i was also thinking in that matter ..... what will you prefer if you want a good competition to fight ????

For me the expensive wood is for display at home, and plastic boards (with new, heavily weighted plastic pieces) is what the tournament halls are filled with.
So it's plastic that gets me in the right mood for hard chess.

ok thats very good ...means you take full advantage of chess by means of beauty and by playing it ... :) :) .....i always play chess on the board shown in the above picture

Contrast is a big issue for me if it's a tournament game. If there's too much you'll get a headache staring at the board, but if the shades are too close, the position can seem a bit blurry and the pieces don't "pop" out as nicely.
I played on one guys wooden board. A beautiful set, very nice... but the pieces were glossy and the shine was somewhat annoying.

I love nice wood sets on a wooden board! I feel like I play better, but it is probably just psychology at work-that is OK with me though :)
I also love to play with the weighted plastic pieces too, chess doesn't feel quite the same when I play with the cheap tournament pieces.
I guess I believe in psychology and in good moves :)
Bobby Fischer spent much of his time playing on his cheap 2-dimensional pocket set.
Personally, I like playing on a beautiful set, that is part of the game's charm for me. And I envy those with nicer wooden sets than I have. The German set I have spent most of my adult life with is not as finely carved as the French set I had as a teenager, and I still miss it.

I like chess sets made of cheese which encourage you to keep your strength up by eating them as you capture pieces.

my chess sets made out of paper, its a bugger when you spill your drink on it. beggers can't be choosers though ay
the tone of game depends very much on the field on which we are playing....... i love to play on luxury chess sets as the beautiful pieces always boost me up with confidence .... and i never want to lost them easily ........
