I'm a mid-forties man who has known how to play chess since I was a kid, but never really gotten that good at it. I go through periods of interest and then go years without playing. I think I stop because I don't feel that I am making any improvements. What do you all think is the best approach to improve my playing, i.e., what will give me the biggest bang for my buck so to speak so that I will stay interested? Thanks!
Well judging by your current rating db I would definitely consider doing tactics trainer on a regular basis. I would also work on opening preparation so you can determine the critical moments when to search for a winning tactic. That will take you to at least 1600 to 1800.
