In chess.com in the country list what is the international symbol???

Perhaps someone wants an icon by their name but they don't want to give out their country.
Many people use flags that don't represent their country, or they'll use a flag to represent where they are from but not where they live, or vice versa.
You could start another forum and ask all "international" people why they choose it?

I think I am one of the afore-mentioned, so I will take/make my case:
I took the international 'flag' because, instead of defining myself as the citizen of a specific Country (or Nation, or Federation, etc, etc) I prefer to define myself as a "citizen of the Globe".
Particularly when I am given the option, that is... ;-P
Futhermore, my choice also relates to Chess, which I see more like a ludic esperanto, than like a specific set of rules, institutions, national and International Federations.
Apart from my case, and in addition to the cases mentioned above by Blackenne, that are probably the most frequent, I also know of people that take the international flag because they are travelling, and most tipycally backpacking;
Finally, I think I should mention the fact that there exists a quite vaste and eterogeneous cathegory of persons that are not citizens of any Country or Nation or similar entity. They are stateless persons:

In their case the option would not even be an option but I guess a necessity.

That's also the reason I prefer the international flag.
In addition to the other possibilities mentioned by bumiputra, I believe that a few players might avoid giving away their nationality (or choose a false nationality) because they don't want their opponents to know their time zone which, perhaps, might give a small advantage in 24-hour online games by making the hours they sleep and play unpredicatable.

he he and others might be playing from outer space and wouldn't want their opponents to know they are spying them from above

Who knows?
I do think that IF I were one of them, then we would like an Outer Space icon included in the list...
Would that be possible? Can we petition?

Draw seven white interlocking circles that make a flower in the middle. Make the background blue and you have the International flag for the Space Station, I think.

Oskar Pernefeldt created the flag I just mentioned not to represent the Space Station but for Planet Earth to possibly be used in future Mars Explorations.

It really fits for backpacking chess players.
If you keep a track of players you beat, and from which countries, international is a bonus feather in your cap.

so, there was this once when someone from a country different from mine was playing a match with me and started harrassing me over my home country. (back when i had the flag on display). they were chanting a slogan that they thought would offend me and offered a rematch when i asked them if i was actually supposed to be mad at what they said. of course, i ignored that request. however amused i was of their fickle attempt at trying to piss me off, i decided i never wanted to experience that in a Chess match ever again. i don't like the idea of showing my country to people while playing in general because i don't think my country has anything to do with my skill and so is an irrelevant field. i also don't like the idea of getting taunted by the folks of my own country over losing (yes, it happened to me once). needless to say, i resorted to using the 'International' label for many reasons.

That's also the reason I prefer the international flag.

Whoah, that's complicated.
