Inception

I went to the midnight premiere of the film "Inception". I'm sure everyone has seen the commercials.

However, what you don't know is that one of the main characters bears the name "Robert Fischer" while another carries a chess piece around with her at all times.

Dude!  How about a "Spoiler Alert!" first next time, mmmkay?

The information in no way messes up the story.

1. Person's name

2. Insignificant detail that does not affect the plot

Don't worry, the movie has A LOT MORE in it that just that.

lol love it!  we are thinking of viewing it tonight.  thanks for the heads up!

although the character is called robert fischer, they do mention his middle name in the movie and it's NOT james.  however i did wonder if there might be a connection.

I thought there would be a connection when they gave the name and

spoiler(not plot relevant)

the girl's totem was a chess piece

however, nothing about that ever panned out.

Ah it's still kinda cool. And I saw the movie a second time. I'm pretty sure his middle name was james....

i remember his middle name starting with an "M" but can't find it anywhere online.  he is listed as Robert Fischer Jr. on some site although the character's dad was called Maurice.  maybe his name was Robert Maurice Fishcer.  i did think it was funny his name was robert fischer.  mentioned it to my wife during the film.

I thought the same thing and it was interesting that they were trying to mess with his psyche.  Plus the chess piece.  Makes me wonder if that connection was intentional.

I noticed his name the first time around and thought it might be significant, but saw nothing.  Just saw it again, here's what I got.

~~~~~SPOILER ALERT~~~~~~~~
*****************************************
Robert Fischer had a "military trained mind" thus all his protectors were a lot more serious.  Chess is a game of serious miltary conflict.  The protectors that Fischer had were all wearing black until the final level when they were in the Arctic wearing white.
The piece that she had was the Bishop, and it was gold.  The bishop is the piece that is next to the king, the right hand man, which is what Fischer wanted to be to his father, the "king" of his Empire.  The piece was gold, representing identity or truth, and she knocks it over after building the piece.
I don't think this is anything more than just a symbol of the complexity of getting into someone's mind.  Nolan chose chess, a HIGHLY complex game (as we all know) as a means to hint to breaking into someone's conscious.
EvilDictator
Yeah, I laughed when his name was Bobby Fischer. None of my friends understood why I laughed.
chess4skool
I thought it was interesting that the piece was a bishop because it was one of Fischer's favorite pieces
"Gambit" was also used in the movie.
Oh yeah! I would post what the context of the word was but then I'd have to put SPOILER ALERT all over the thread
 Yeah, I just saw the film tonight and noticed the subtle allusions to chess in general and to Bobby Fischer in particular. They spelt "Fischer" with a "c" just like Bobby's surname. And I thought the fact that Bobby grew up without a father was alluded to in the film by the conflict the Robert Fischer character had with his father and his feelings of abandonment. I don't know why Ellen Page's character didn't develop her interest in chess more in the film. She chose the bishop for apparently unknown reasons as there was no context provided. In Silman's Complete Endgame Course he explains Fischer's well known love of Bishop endings. Maybe this was alluded to with the bishop, but who's to say. Thankfully, there were no anti-semitic or anti-American rants in the film.
