No. Very few players get ratings below 1000. It's probably somewhere in the ballpark of 1500. Incidentally, pretty sure the mediant is like a music thing or something to do with fractions. Do you mean the mean, median, or mode?
is 1000 the average player ?

Just go to your own profile and click on the "Full Stats" link for whichever time control you are interested in (Blitz, Rapid, Daily, etc) and it will TELL you what percentile you are in.
The average is different for each time control.
FIDE ratings don't even go that low, do they? FIDE is World Federation over-the-board (not internet) ratings. Do you mean Glicko2?
For chess.com ratings, look at https://www.chess.com/leaderboard/live and choose the time control.
For Blitz the average is apparently 960.
@Blueemu, I think you checked the local ratings.
Edit: no, that doesn't make a difference. But I get 8,624,399 Blitz players averaging 960. Are we using different links?

Mine is only the active players.
Anyone who hasn't played in three months is considered inactive.
I think...

@Blueemu Yes, I figured. But how do you get there? Click on full stats and then what?
Leaderboard => Global.

That's what I did. It works for Daily, but not for Blitz, though I should be considered inactive for both. Maybe because I only played 3 Blitz games here, I'm considered extra inactive
Try somebody else's profile. Shouldn't be hard to find an active player.
Doesn't make a difference. Not that I'd care, I just wonder what's going on.

960 is correct for active blitz players. @ bluemu get rating from inactive players.

No, his total amount of players is smaller.

Other way around. My total number of players was only 1/3rd of his (3,000,000 vs 8,000,000), so his number included two inactive players for every active player.
I am wondering with fide scores, is 1000 taken to be the average player grade ie the mediant? e.g. if I get above 1000 am I in the top 50% of players relatively speaking ? thanks.
