Is 3D chess like Spock played on Star Trek any good?

This looks like a beautiful 3D set up.

And I think, this is Chinese 3-way chess ?Undecided  Don't ask me how its played. I'd have to read the instructions 4 times.Embarassed

I had 3-d set many years ago. I played a few games but we found it very hard to checkmate because the King could move to another board when threatened.

Seems to me that 3d go played on a 19x19x19 grid would be a mindboggling game to try to learn.

Now you metnion it, Captain Hunt regularly played 3d go in Andromeda (the other Gene Roddeburry based series). Not that I'm a sci-fi geek though.

I have one of the 3D boards that is three boards stacked (the one in my avatar). Unlike RJC, I play by the Millennium Chess rules, so one player begins on the top, and the other on the bottom. I thoroughly enjoy playing on this board. It is a fun challenge, but the rules are pretty simple. (In essence, the normal moves that pieces make are turned up onto their sides for moving between levels.)

As for actual tridimensional (Star Trek) chess, I have never played it. The rules are complex (some boards are actually movable throughout the course of the game) and the boards are expensive. It may be fun, but I wouldn't know. However, if you are looking to take your chess challenge to the "next level," I would highly recommend Millenium Chess to you. :)
