Is 700 elo good for someone who has only been playing for a month and a half

I am pretty new to chess (1.5 months) and I am at around 700 elo. What, if anything made you get better really fast? Do you think 700 elo is reasonable for me?

blueemu

Yes, 700 is quite good if you've played enough games (30 or so) to stabilize your rating.

What to do to improve?

Study each of your lost games and figure out WHY you lost it. Your own lost games are a gold mine of information when it comes to figuring out which aspects of your play need more work.

Learn tactics, model mates, simple endgames and the simple principles that apply to more complex endgames.

Don't waste too much time studying openings, not at your level.

It depends on where you start from

@blueemu

Thanks for the feedback! What's the best way to study endgames? And what exactly are "model mates?"

If you got better, then yes. If you got lower, then no.

Model mates are recurring checkmate patterns, which tend to form "families"

I can offer an example, with the family of Lolli mates.

Lolli mates are based on an advanced Pawn on f6 (or f3 if Black is the attacker).

Here is the simplest one:

It gets a little harder if Black has time to defend the mating square (g7) with his Rook.

And if Black can prevent you from penetrating to the back rank, you might need to use an edge file (such as the h-file) for your mating pattern instead.

Those were some of the members of the Lolli family. There are also Smothered Mates, Corridor Mates, Epaulette Mates, Boden's Mate, Philidor's Mate, Damiano Mates, Greco Mates, Anastasia's Mate, Legal's Mate, Cozio's Mate, Blackburne's Mate, etc.

Greco's mate involves a Bishop holding the opponent's King in the corner, while your Queen or Rook checkmates him on the open Rook file, like this:

... and here is how that mating pattern might arise in a game:

Studying endgames? There are some books on the subject, and probably videos.

How'd you get all the way up there in a month?

I have also been playing for about a month and a half and I'm near the same rating, I don't consider myself very good as I still blunder a fair amount of the time but I would say that 700 is cool.

@piedraven

I just watch a lot of Gotham lmao

@walnutarcher

Do you wanna 1v1?

I've been playing for many years and I'm only a 740. So after a month and a half, 700 must be excellent.

I just watched four of your losses and I think you're good. I know watching losses sounds weird but you look at losses to improve. I can tell you're aggressive which is good. I think you have a potential not to blunder as much as some players because you seem to be pretty observant. I didn't see you hanging your pieces too much. I really liked the way you simplify. That's a sign of a good player. I have a strange suggestion for you. Play the Queen's Gambit. You kept playing d4 and it was killing me seeing you not following-up with c4. I think you would do well with it. Do yourself a favor and get a Gold Membership. Do the puzzles. You are already observant and have good situational awareness. The puzzles will only help with that.

@BoardMonkey

Thanks for the feedback. The reason I don't play Queen's Gambit is that I am already so familiar with the London System that I don't want to branch out quite yet. I know all of the lines by heart and it gets me a really nice position in most games. I still have to learn the lines on how to beat the Englund gambit, and I have to learn an opening for black when white that starts with queen's pawn. I want to learn those before I start learning about more openings for white. And thank you for all of that kind feedback.

BoardMonkey

I didn't recognize the London. Keep going with that one.

BoardMonkey

Indeed.

700 is like realy good ive been playing for like 3 months and i have 500 but the dificulty has increased and for 500 elo you need 0 blunders almost every game ocasiounaly you need like 2 mistakes if your playing against 800 elo

You are 144 because your skill is 144. Unless you are losing games on purpose.
