Totally agree. To me, patzer / woodpusher is synonymous with "amateur". What's so bad about being an amateur? As you said, most of the time, when someone thinks they aren't a patzer here, they're kidding themselves.
I don't have a problem with it. However, I've commented on a few threads here and when people don't like what I have to say they call attention to my rating. Big deal. I'm not that good a chess player. At least I enjoy it.
A lot of people on this site try to make out that what you have to say is less relevant because your rating is lower. It's the same as putting crap on someone else because you can run faster/lift more weight. Boring "pissing contest" stuff. So I guess in that context I do have a problem with it. I think there are certain threads that as soon as you comment in them you just get put down if you're not above a certain rating. So in that context, "patzer" means "haha, I am better than you!"
I saw a post in another thread, where someone got all worked up about a guy whom called a helpful chess player a 'patzer'.
made me think- is being called an Patzer even an insult?!
respectfully, I think the answer is NO-- unless
you're a competent chess professional (a supergm), you a famed book author, or your an experienced chess coach.
also, given. that it depends a little on who is given the insult. perhaps its not SO insulting for someone very good; like Carlsen to call someone low rated that he commonly beats (read: nakamara) a 'patzer'. to carlsen- perhaps a LOT of guys are patzer.
on the other hand, IMHO. your clowns ought to be be nice and respectful to Nakamara no matter what your engine says LOL.
but generally, being a patzer is relative. being a patzer is normal- its really HARD to be awesome at chess. and its healthy to leave your ego at home when your are out playing chess (online or not). to someone, everyone here IS a patzer.
... obviously I'm more comfortable with the term than most. what do the rest of you think? perhaps the term feels more insulting to you than me. why??
