Is blitz really bad if u want to improve

What's the best way to improve at chess? I've always played blitz either 5 or 10 min games (about 4000 games inc my other profile) about 4 months ago I got fed up of not improving so I became a premium member. I've spent hours and hours on tactics trainer and chess mentor and watched a few vids. I feel that my game is better and my knowledge is much better, but my ratings prob only averaged about 30 points higher. In a game situation i find I forget a lot of what I learnt. So, I've decided to get into online chess. My theory is that if I have longer to work out the positions using theory that have learnt my rating will go up by at least 200 points very quickly!

Would be interested to know how long other people take to improve?

blitz will not help you improve. you have to either take coaching or read books or something.

Play 2x 30 minutes games.(As I know it is the highest live here) 2x 5 or 10 minutes is not enough to think. If you are preparing for a marathon, you should not sprint all the time.

i noticed that i started improving when i started playing longer matches. after about 3 years my rating has changed from 900 to 1650.

15+10 is great for learning for me. I dont feel any time trouble with that time. The point is you should play a game where you dont feel any time pressure but it keeps you concentrated. Online chess it not for me because it is too slow. I prefer long but live games where I have to stay focused.

Coolbluesky

Lol.. for me it's wayyy too fast to think

RukhMania

play  only with higher rated's.just leave lower rated opponent's totally.it's lasker's tips.

Sounds like you're on the right path, ratty.  It's true that correspondence chess is a kind of "training wheels" chess, but because it lets you use books and most databases you get to really hone your opening repetoire.  The time pressure is off so you can work on planning instead of just reacting to your opponents moves.  Blitz is useful if you're trying to explore a new opening and want to see the typical positions that develop, but otherwise leave it for titled players to show off their skills.

Blitz improve your intuition

I kind of agree with Estragon, except that when I first started being blitzed

i felt like it was wrecking my chess game, short circuiting my impulse

to go deeper! Now my brain is numb to it, the only thing it improves is

my confidence when I win, but it's like a drug to play when you can't sleep.

I sort of hate it, but sometimes it's very fun. I doubt it's the way to go to

improve your game.

If you want to really see something, watch a bunch of grandmaster pgn games in a pgn viewer on high speed. Woooooo!

Gives a feel for general and some specific dynamics of the game of chess.

McDonalds is bad for you if done in excess but it is still fun.

When people ask "Is Blitz is bad?" , they really need to suppelment this question with a measurable + realistic goal "I need to get to this ____ rating / beat players 200 pts stronger than me / I need to do well at my U1600 Rated OTB slow-game tournament" etc.

Exclusively playing blitz can be terrible for some of these goals and harmless for others.  Like fastfood ... doing it in moderation with slow games allows you to enjoy the game  when you don't have a lot of time on your hands as well as practice openings or flex your tactical muscles.

Some people need to climb mountains to have fun, others are happy where they are just enjoying the scenery.

blitz has some postives...you can practise your openings, endgames and tactics and efficient thinking process.

Blitz relies on your fundamental knowledge and experience, ability to recognize patterns, simple tactics and mating positions, and to some extent the speed of your thought processes (which is why old timers like me don't play blitz well against the kids).  If you don't have the background, you'll get smashed by those who do.  Blitz moves are too fast for analysis, and seldom do blitz players go back over games to analyze mistakes.  Someone once said that the single best way to improve is to play over your losses (not your wins) and understand what you did wrong.  Blitz takes you out of all of that - you don't analyze and you don't learn much if anything.

You apparently overestimate this generation of low-attention span, instant-gratification gimme-gimme youth who don't have time for ... oh, squirrel!

Improve endgames in blitz???? Endgames require accuracy, you can't be accurate in blitz

pdve

yeah the endgame argument is bogus. the only format where you can play endgames properly is in over the board tournaments.

Online chess is what helped me the most, blitz is not a good way to improve chess. It's not even the best way to improve your blitz chess at first.
