Is chess a game or a sport?

I guess.... People who take it up seriously call it sport and people who play for fun as a habit, call it a game

Mirriam-Webster defines a sport as - “A contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other.”

I agree with Aizen89, chess can be viewed as an artform; the chess board is the canvas upon which great games unfold. Of course, blueemu has the ultimate answer here (at least as far as comedy is concerned). Hopefully this is not literal. When I hear games displaying Alekhine's famous attacking style, I often hear the opponent described as "trying to hold out the defense, while the opponent flings all of the pieces at their face."
I will never think of this in the same way again
The general rule is....if you can drink beer and smoke cigarettes (of any kind) while you do it...its a game. thus chess is......a violent game.

It’s a game. Sports require physical exertion.

Are you saying moving the peices takes no physical exertion? I used to think of it as a game but by this definition it's a sport.
"exertion
I think it's a sport, as it brings in environmental factors into the game-play, especially over the board factors when playing chess with a real person and a real board.
