Is chess a scary game?...(If yes or no, why?)

To me, Yes ...why? I am not sure why I am saying Yes, but I think it depends.

If I am playing a strong player then I am scared (If I am not yet in a winning position against a strong player). I am only not scared only when I know that I am playing a weak player.

ilikeflags

scary?  as in, you're scared?  what are you afraid of?

Legendary_King

Ilikeflags - have u never been emotionally scared in a chess match? (For example, It is A MUST WIN game for u to qualify for the national team or A MUST WIN for ur club, those are just examples)

Ubik42

The emotion isnt really "scared" for me, but when I am in an OTB tournament usually my heart rate is noticeably higher. When it isn't, and I am relaxed, it is usally a sign that I am not into the game and will likely blunder soon.

Its not fear, but it sure feels like it.

ilikeflags

not scared. i've had adrenaline pumping and felt excitement, but never fear.

Depends how attached you are, and to what.

You could get into an all out panic if you are heavily attached to winning and feel insecure about your odds.

I've noticed that the proper degree of detachment helps a lot.  For example, some days I'm driving, perhaps in a hurry.  Every car that goes slow, changes into my lane in front of me, or does anything that slows me down bothers me a lot sometimes.   But other days, I'm thinking about something, no big rush, detached, and time flies.  Cars pass in, pass out, inconvenience me, and I don't even notice, I just enjoy the ride, time flies and before I know it, I'm there.

It's not the game of chess that's scary, you just need to know how to manage your own mind and mood and keep it in perspective.

Oh, I see. So your problem is that you are afraid of your stronger opponent. Because you think you have no chances (even for a draw) at all. But that is just not true. If a player is 100-200 rated above you, than he is probably stronger, but you can beat him. (I mean in FIDE or USCF rating, chess.com does not matter) Just do not think you have no chances.
Be brave! Attack! If you are keeping passive defence, you will not cause him any problems. Always play the board, not the rating.
To beat a stronger opponent is not impossible. Every chess player gets, later on increases his rating by beating stronger opponents than him. So if someone else can do it, you can do it as well.

Anxiety =/= fear

Can chess involve a lot of anxiety?  Sure.  Maybe it's just a regular game and you're in a tough position and your clock is running low.

Iknownotwhy

A bit off topic but I was at school with a kid who had plastiphobia(irrational fear of plastics)Whenever we played matches against other schools he had to bring his wooden chess board along.Once he forgot it and and refused to play due to his fear of touching the plastic pieces,we lost the point! He had a tough life trying to avoid plastics and an even tougher life avoiding kids who knew this and gave him hell.

I wish that my life was that happy so my only concern in life was a chess game hahaha.

If you are a pro player and you are in an horrible economic situation so you know that you MUST win a tournament, then yes, it may be scary.

But otherwise I do not see any reason of why it should be a scary game. Sometimes you may get kinda nervous, but scared? No way!

What is the best and the worst thing that can happen if you beat a strong player? Well, if you win, you will be happy with yourself for some minutes. If you lose knowing that you could won, then you will be angry/sad for some minutes. That is all.

If a chess game can be that scary to you, then I think you have not lived enough life experiences.

That must mean Carlsen shouldn't be playing chess either, as seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaDdbxIeXBU&list=FL-4KUhOns-pRF1ubTBJseBQ&index=1 he actually shakes near the end. It's ok for people to get scared when playing a serious game.

Fear_ItseIf

scared of a chess match?

I think thats called fischer syndrome.

he wasnt scared, if he was scared he wouldnt have so early the WC title is mine,  the soviets have my title, even before he became world champion.

Its funny Bobby Fischer got asked what he would say if Spasski said i can beat bobby fischer and bobby said i would tell him not to say things he doesnt believe in.

Nice link, I enjoy watching Carlsen playing blitz for some reason.

If you think he was scared, then I can only say that you have a bad perception.  He did not look scared to me, just playing.

It's ok for people to be nervous, anxious and/or concerned but not scared.

Agreed, very shaky hands doesn't necessarily mean fear; that being said he did look really on edge, especially when he hung his piece.

Absolutely!  They should instead focus on something that really matters in life like shopping at Walmart.

lol good one

chasm1995

I was playing in a highschool tournament against the second highest rated player.  My shirt was literally moving with each beat of my heart.  Is that being scared?  No; it is nervousness.

If you're not risking life or limb I'd say you have little to worry about in deed.

Everyone's heart will occasionally "speed up" during a hard fought game.

Goes with the territory.

Like walking up a narrow trail, inside the Grand Canyon.  Just one slip-up and down you go, in defeat.

That assumes you're truly serious about the Royal Game.  Smile

Sensei_Joel2013

To me? yes, very but recently i started to think to myself why should it be scary? then i thought, its just a game. Nobody will judge you. and, its not life threatening
