Do you believe that chess is a bit violent?

Segway_Enthusiast

I think a lot of the players are suffering from head injuries.

MrDamonSmith

Yep, it's pretty brutal.

White_Rabbit

Hockey is a violent sport.  Chess, not so much.  I'm not even sure if chess could be called a sport, but that's a whole different forum topic.

It can be sometimes if you are playing in a bar.

netzach

Yes.

It's not for the faint-hearted.

(White_Rabbit has obviously never played chess in a bar in Europe.)

Anything involving competition and losing could lead to violence.  I'm sure somewhere there have been brawls over a heated round of Bingo, but in general I'd say chess isn't that violent.

And I'm guessing that alcohol may have played a bigger part than chess in those violent European bar games, but Netzach is right, I've never played chess in a bar in Europe.

Yep, especially if you start cheating and take someone's pawn while mumbling some strange French phrase like "en passant". Wink
