I continue to not understand how engines, and such have "ruined" or are supposed to have "ruined" chess for the average everyday players.

Has it changed how top level chess players prepare?  Obviously.

Has it changed how i prepare/play?  No.

Has it changed my enjoyment of the game? No.

I just don't understand how something rated 3000...3500...3800+ is supposed to have impacted the average player.  How can something impact your game, if you don't even understand the "why" behind the moves from something that strong?

Just my .02...

They haven’t ruined chess they are just making it much tougher for us to win and we most likely will win at least once against a computer we would just have to not do a tactic at all most likely and match what the computer does with pure oddity of our moves so no it can’t ruin chess it just makes it tough

Have forklifts ruined weightlifting competitions?

Have motorcycles ruined footraces?

No, chess computers have not ruined chess. As IMBacon said, they have changed how top level players prepare, but that's it. For you and me down here in the trenches, their power is irrelevant.

I work with kids teaching chess.  And i have to be subjected to this mentality from time to time.  Kids that barely know how the pieces move, and they are telling me how aggressive/tactical they are.  How they play the hyper accelerated dragon, or some other "aggressive" opening.

So we sit down to play, and they promptly drop 3 pieces in the first 8-10 moves.  And the first reason (actually excuse) they give is: "You didn't play the book moves.  Thats' why i lost."  I then have to tell them the reason they lost is because they are trying to sound like, and play like a GM.  When they need to be honest with themselves, and understand they are a beginner.

I enjoyed reading the posted article.  Very well researched and thought out.

Relegating chess to the learning of ancient Greek or Latin was a bit of an ouch moment.

Why should fight engine?

Cool feedback!

Engines only ruin chess games in cases where people with very low character cheat by using those engines during a game. Chess will be ruined the day someone is able to insert a chip in their brain and others are unable to tell that this person has a chip in their brain. Think about it, that will be the day when people can win all the tournaments and money (by secretly using the chip in their brain). So yes, that will be the day chess, and all sorts of other types of games, which require extensive brain power, and even gambling, will end. It will mark the beginning of a new era of competitions; an era of hybrid human/robot competitions. A very sad day for those who have spent a lifetime training themselves in the art of chess. Imagine a 10-year-old with a chip in his or her brain approaching a GM and wiping him or her off the board. Even if that 10-year-old has never played chess before. Depressing. Until then, though, enjoy!

I think the internet is the main game changer. The amount of knowledge that anybody has about chess today is staggering. You basically have a lifetime worth of collection at your fingertips at all times
