Is it cheating to refer to YouTube videos in Daily Chess?

That's a cool game you referenced above. I'll have to take some time to analyze it after I just flipped through it. Way to go. The forum is fun, too. 🙄😁

Incredibly nerve wracking. I kept expecting my opponent to uncork his own improvement, preventing me from revealing mine. But no, I got in the first novelty.

When the game ended, my first reaction was "Well... thank Christ THAT'S over!"

The use of any resource that does not have engine or table base evaluations attached to lines is perfectly fine in a correspondence game.

Correct.

There is I guess, a bit of a gray area, when the authors in books or youtubers in their videos say something like "and in this situation the engine would suggest this or that".

I still think it is very much fine to consult such a book or video and even play said move.

As long as you do not use an engine or a table base or consult another person it should be fine. Otherwise playing daily and studying chess at the same time would become nearly impossible, because you would eventually end up studying something that has something to do with one of the daily games you have going...

EDIT: I want to make it clear that these rules are for DAILY chess only. In live chess, obviously, books, videos etc are NOT allowed during a game.

Youtube-videos are definitely allowed (in daily chess). It says you may consult books, lessons, or VIDEOS right here: https://support.chess.com/article/317-what-counts-as-cheating-on-chess-com

--The below are ALLOWED--

  • Books - You may consult chess books, lessons, or videos to search for a good move. These resources do not involve an engine that finds an answer for you, so are okay for Daily games!
  • Opening databases - You may look at opening databases, or game records to find a good move. You may NOT use any of these that also use an engine to evaluate the best moves!
  • The in-game self-analysis tool - You may use the self analysis tool to look at possible moves, and to set conditional moves. This is only available in Daily games!

i would say since it doesn't affect any ratings and is just for yourself, it doesn't

It's impossible to come up with the exact move you need in any one situation from studies. All you can do is increase your general knowledge, which may or may not help you in a current game. Nothing I've studied has ever helped me directly in a game. The new gambit I tried backfired. I still have to apply what I know to each move. During R/B/B games there's no time to do anything but think about the game.

I've never used the analyzer. Almost seems unfair, but I know some of my opponents have used it, so I'll have to learn.

DUH, yeah. That’s like flipping through you chess notes during a tournaments. Might as well be using Stockfish. Cheating is cheating, period.
