Is it possible for an IM to defeat a GM?

Am asking because after playing through kasparov-carlsen game of 2004, I couldnt stop wondering just how a 2400 somethng kid could stand against the beast of baku a GM. are u telling me that other IM's example silman can also draw or win against a GM?

TheLastSupper

You are playing against a kid. Would you play tryhard? No. And there has been numerous cases in which a GM has lost to a kid, and most GMs played fishy moves in those games, which they normally don't do.

pdela

YES!

How do you think people get GM title?

Nusons

I think the difference between Carlsen and any other IM's is that Carlsen was just still reaching his peek (where on opposite most IM's are at their peek once they have reached the title) and he probably was already way more stronger than his rating suggested just because otb rating change is just so slow.

It would be possible in theory (albeit unlikely in practice) to get the GM title without ever having defeated a GM.

Is is possible for someone to beat another person who is 100-400 points higher?

Yes.

On wikipedia it says:

In addition, at least two favorable results (called norms) from a total of at least 27 games in tournaments involving other Grandmasters, including some from countries other than the applicant's, are usually required before FIDE will confer the title on a player.

So basically one has to win at least 2 out of 27 games in tournmanets involving Grandmasters? So does that mean that if, in those 27 games I play 25 against grandmasters and lose all of them, and in the other 2 I play some guy rated 1000 and win both, I will get the GM title if I meet all of the other requirements? It only says the games have to be from "tournaments involving other Grandmasters," and patzers can play in the same tournmanet as a Grandmaster.

Easy happens all the time

It's of course quite common, not least among young, improving players. IM Artemiev for example won against three GMs just in Pavlodar Open 2012.

Also, some GMs have dropped in strength since getting the title and lose now and then to considerably lower rated opponents. Here GM (not "just" WGM) Zhaoqin Peng loses with white to an untitled 2120-rated opponent:

IM defeating a GM is very commonplace, nothing unusual.

An IM completely crushing an SUPER gm:

Marc Esserman is IM

Loak van Wely is GM (super-gm)

Yes,this is significantly more possible than a 1300 beating a 2700

Nathalie_B

yes. every things can be happen

madhacker

There's overlap between IM and GM. The strongest IMs will be a fair bit stronger than the weakest GMs. There's probably even a small overlap between FM and GM. They are just titles.

JJZ03

IM could beat GM.

skakmadurinn

I must say this is a very stupid question.

Ofcourse IM can beat GM.

If IM's could not beat GM's how are they going to be GM's themselves?

Do you understand now?
