Is It Possible To Become A GM Online?

Is it possible to become a GM or another master online? I was wondering since it is possible that chess might have to stay online or quite a while.

No, I don't think so. Unless a way can be found to confirm all games were played fairly, I doubt if any online titles can be awarded. For now, anyway. happy.png

I had the same question a few months ago, and from what I found, you can not get an official title from online play. All of the official titles require you to play in tournaments OTB.

However, there are some chess titles that you can earn from just playing online on some other sites - look them up.

Hope this helps! Good luck with your chess adventures!

They already worry so much about cheating in OTB tournaments—can you imagine the lengths some people would go through to get it if you could do it online?

yeah, now that I think of it, it would be pretty easy to get a title by cheating.

There is cheating in OTB? How does that even work? I've never played in a tournament and don't plan to cheat but didn't even know that was possible.

By memorizing computer moves man

There are 10^120 possible chess games

Good luck memorizing all that

i think it's more like 10^300 or so, since after  move 4, there are 4 mil possibilities

Same way people cheat at exams.

The most common way is to use your phone in the toilets.

that's why in most official tournaments they made a new rule that your phone has to be kept inside your bag that stays at the table or in your car or hotel room grin.png
