It will surprise your opponent. But I think it is not good against a better player.

The scandinavian defense has not been refuted or found unsound. However, it doesn't score as well as some others in master play.

Since it is a less common defense it make a good way to surprise your opponent as @arul_kumar pointed out. So if the player playing it, plays it a lot it can make for an easy advantage. It sounds like this is the case with your friend he plays it a lot and knows it, but you don't so this works to his advantage.

It is played at master level. If you download history for some of the bigger tournaments, you'll notice it is played often but not nearly as often as 1...e5.

I play it, and sscore well with it.  If white pushes the e-pawn, i get a French Advance.  If white takes the pawn, i play 2.Nf6, and look forward to an Icelandic Gambit.

After 1.e4 d5 2.e5 you can play Bf5 with better chances than you'd have in the Advance French.
