I recently asked a question in the forum about The Art Of Middlegame book for which none answered. So I have changed my decision to buy Silmans endgame course. But my question is am I making a right decision? Is this book really help to improve my rating? MY present rating in blitz is 546

At that rating I wouldn’t recommend proper studying. Just look at YouTube videos and try to look at every position(maybe flip the board so you can see it from your opponents point of view while playing?) and play longer time controls

No, I don’t the book will help you.

What you need to know <1000 is basic endgame positions. But it is important that you know them very good. You don’t need to book to gather this knowledge and skill. YouTube will do. Or the lessons here in chesscom.

I don't remember if I have The Art of the Middle Game and I can't check right now so I'd better not comment on it.

You will not go wrong with Silman's endgame book. It starts at lower level endgames and works its way to higher levels. It covers what the vast majority of low to mid level players need in the endgame and is easily understood.

Here's a link to a thread about endgame books. https://www.chess.com/forum/view/endgames/which-endgame-manual

And a link to a long but very informative blog for beginners. https://www.chess.com/blog/RussBell/good-chess-books-for-beginners-and-beyond

It´s a really good book. The information in the first two chapters is essential knowledge for chess players of ALL levels but, as others have mentioned, you can find this info elsewhere. I bought the book and I´m very pleased I did. Fantastic explanations and plenty of exercises to test your understanding.

I got a draw against a WGM because of my endgame knowledge based from this book (it wasn´t a dead draw but she didn´t have time to break my defence so drew instead of flagging).

FOR IMPROVING MIDDLE GAME READ ROAD TO CHESS MASTERY BY MAX. EUWE

I have the book. I like Silman's approach which is pragmatic. He has divided the book into chapters based on rating. He recommends learning the material upto your rating and maybe the next chapter, then put the book away and work on other areas of your chess until your rating improves and you are ready for the next chapter. Good advice for beginners who want to improve all areas.

There are many books about it, including by Silman. Or youtube videos... Check out the youtube site of the St. Louis chess club for example.

srirampranav43

i asked the book called the art of middle game

Jenium

I see. Haven't read that one, sorry.

I checked and I don't have that book. I did some searches (the search engine here seems brain damaged) and found a few threads that weren't quite worth linking to. The majority opinion seems to be that it's a good book but most people seem to prefer Silman's Reassess Your Chess.

You cannot go wrong buying Silman's book. At a low rating of 546, you of course need to play a lot of slow games--I prefer daily games at 3 days per move--and really think about what you're doing. Look for hanging pieces, one and two move combinations, etc.

Also lots of You Tube videos such as agadmator's channel and Mato Jelic's channel, and playing over master games here on chess.com.

But, back to Silman's book. It is, I believe, a timeless classic. Study of this book, especially the first two sections, will open your eyes to dozens of ideas you had never considered, and will improve your play in all areas. Though you may only be ready for the first chapter now, it's never going to be outdated, and you'll find yourself returning to it again and again.

then which book shall i buy as mentioned earlier my rating in blitz is 547

Silman's Endgame course is good. I recommend it because I am reading this book myself. As for the middle game book I recommend "Understanding chess middle game" by John Nunn happy.png. Hope this helps.

Play longer times as well. Blitz is fine but longer games will help you more.
