Is the summer heat also killing your chess?

I have a theory I wanna check!

I live in a warm climate country with high humidity, even some night time are very tough heat-wise, very short winters, etc..

I recently dropped almost 300 Rapid points which never ever happened to me (Blitz fluctuates, but Rapid ?! - first time). In the single tilt session of losing the last say 100 points, I noticed the heat was cooking my brain. No air conditioning where my computer is.

I wondered if this happens to others? It would be interesting to see if there is a correlation between hot countries and a recent dip in rating, vs colder countries where summer is not so hot and intense.

Also I believe the heat especially prevents me from doing puzzles daily cuz it's hard to concentrate... but I factor that in

are you from Florida? happy.png Tell what is your climate, and check the stats for comparison... or if you are in a cooler city, check also and perhaps it can also prove something

I mean, technically slightly but not really. If you’re just really distracted because it’s hot and you’re sweating and stuff yes that’s a real reason

no because i play chess indoors, where there's air conditioning actually

It's actually a very interesting topic. People tend to underrate the impact of heat on their mental health. Even if you have an A/C, the mere thought of not being able to go outside during heat waves can be daunting. I experience more brain fogs in summer. That's why I prefer to play at night (being a night owl helps of course).

I think you could be correct. We had a heat wave for a few weeks with real feel sometimes in the 105 range with high humidity. I found myself not wanting to exercise as much and just being sapped after running errands.

Heat = more fatigue

More fatigue = less energy/concentration

no lol. I've heard many reasons for tilt but this is one of the more far fetched ones

"lol no"? it wasn't a yes or no question.

you are either not from miami, as your name may suggest, or you are a person who has AC in every living space...

otherwise, you would understand happy.png it's difficult when it's also hot and humid during night time, where your body expects the heat to go down, but there is no relief

Yes, also perhaps it's a stress + body heat cycle where you are trying to concentrate, the brain takes alot of energy, meanwhile your body is trying to regulate the temperature with sweat, which also takes energy, then you get tilted, etc... anyways... simple solution, I'm buying a stronger fan and forcing myself to do puzzles daily again.

i play chess with closed doors plus its not that hot where i live

Must be the humidity. Thanks. I couldn’t figure it out. I think I am having the same problem with my fetzer valve.

Im from the PH and it only has 2 seasons. Very hot or very wet. My rating change remains the same in either seasons.

of course we all are distracted by different things, our concentration can benefit or be hindered by different things. My cousin plays chess better while listening to dubstep music, while I find dubstep too distracting to my chess calculations. I prefer playing in silence.

So if the heat is the only 'new' thing you can point out atm, then it probably is the heat for you.

There's also the possibility that you've hit your current ceiling where your rating begin to fluctuate 200-300 points lower or higher.

Yes that's a solid take.

I just know for a fact that if I have to do anything that requires concentration, I need air conditioning, I can't concentrate when sweating...

When I will be able to do daily books and puzzle sessions, I'm sure the rating will go back up again. It's just utterly impossible in my current desk setup.

I love coldness, so…

Definetly yes for me, I don't have air conditioning. Working out at home is also much harder
