Is there a PC chess program that will let me act out hypothetical board setups?

Hi, I'm looking for a PC computer program (preferably simple, small, and free) that will let me set up the pieces however I want and try out hypothetical situations. I'd prefer a program that can save board setups and has a "back" button if I make a wrong move. Thanks!

Chessmaster (currently 11th edition) isn't free. I think it's about $20. But it lets you set up the board and play both sides. Now, you can probably get a freeware to do the same, but...Chessmaster also has a lot of other nice features, including a "Mentor Lines" that will rank all the moves available from any given position. This might make it easier to spot the responses to your hypotheticals.

Try SCID; I'm using it.  It's a also database program--you can save your games.

Be careful about Chessmaster 11th edition.  It supports a limited number of video cards.  That's a potential problem, especially for laptop users.  For my laptop, I purchased an older version, Chessmaster 9000.  It was under $10, downloadable, does not require a CD, and has many excellent tutorials and analysis feature.
