Is there a "best" way to memorize the names of each square?

Is there a best way to practice?

thinking_mac

Is this a general question on memorization? Or specifically applicable to chess?

Sounds like you want to memorize the coordinates on the board better so you can communicate saying "a4", "Knight g4" more easily? In my opinion it has come with practice and persistence.

There are some well known memorization techniques out there: http://medicine.utah.edu/learningresources/tools/memorization.php

the best way i found for learning them is http://en.lichess.org/training and click on the coordiante option. its fun and helpfull. also chesseye is a cool program for help at board visulization .

That is a very cool program, thank you.

I don't think anybody intentionally learns the names. It just comes easily with practice.

This is a great exercise for learning coordinates.  Thanks for posting eatchipss!

i have actually found ways to memerize openings using a Rhyming System.

Knight to f6 = Net Flix...\

i wood like to write a small chess book for kids where they can find out easily to memorize openings, using a Rhyme  Technic....

The Benko Benoni opening , Gambit. =  "Open the Door to Netflix, do Chores, get Chives, then dive form the Bee Hive"..D4 Kf6. C4 C5. D5 B5....

Take Pieces off the Board ? get a grip my Friend...they dont take pieces off the board in real games...

Then, the problem is trying to remember the rhymes.  What happens when the kid "successfully" remembers the rhyme?  It's now move 6 or so.

It's probably better to just play with less pieces until they can digest the whole game.  For example, remove the rooks and queen.  Let them add those pieces when they learn to castle or move a rook to an open file.

You can take this approach and apply it to the rubik's cube.  Remove 4 stickers from 4 sides (get a cheap one or put (new) stickers back on as you learn how to move them).

its alot easier to remember when it Rhymes...

nobody is looking to remove Stickers to make games Fraudulant.

bulletheadbilly

well since you have it all figuired out, why cannot you your self figuire out a way to do it without removing pieces like a true chess Idiot ?

Grandfather to tell his young Grand Daughter after 6 months of teaching her the game of Chess, "Im Sorry Lass, But there are Rooks and Bishops that that Occupy the Board Also", "I never Meant for you to know about Before"...

PrestigiousEclipse

The real question to be how to memorize each squares color and be able to say the squares color without looking if someone asks. Then do that and memorize a position and say what piece is on the square starting from a1 a2 a3 a4 a5 a6 a7 a8 to b1 and so on. Skip the squares with no pieces on them that is a challenge.

We shall teach them to play the Game as the rules apply....nothing less...rhymes can help the laungange that is rhymiing into remeber things. this is an age old process... like the mouse ran up the clock, and the pawn fell off the Dock... Kids love rhymes, and it helps them, even older folk. The Bowlin Knot is a Hard not to master, but it keeps the knott form getting tight, so it can be undone easily...how to tie it ? "The Rabbit runs up the hole, around the Tree, and then back down the Hole".does not ewven rhyme but has the secuence...

csalami

The best way of course is to play OTB, you have to write your moves and thus you learn them after some time. Simply memorizing...I don't know, probably possible but harder.

bulletheadbilly

as a matter of fact I shall untrack for the lack upon the center of the chess core..!

Maybe call it Queen's Roook 1-8? That takes care of the "a" file, anyway.
