Is there a way a Novice can sucker punch a master and win one game?

Hey everyone, first time posting in this forum. I am currently taking a chess class  and next week we play our instructor in a simultaneous exhibition against the whole class. I was just wondering since I am probably rated around 1400-1500 and he is well known master were should I direct my studying to have to the best chance of beating him? I need to find a way to take advantage of the fact that he will be playing the whole class and ill just be playing him. He will have alot less time then me. Any suggestions?

It's not about winning the game. It's about enjoying the game.

Yes, by actually punching the master.

One week is not enough time to do anything drastic. Just try to relax and play your normal game. I remember in the 70s Bent Larsen giving a simul and making a bad blunder against a 1400 player and losing, so anything is possible.

Maybe study his wife?

Or read "How to Win at Chess in Two Minutes or Less" by Elibro Noexiste

Listen to what Westofhollywood told ,you, relax and play your normal game. Don't try to make up some opening, that the Master is most likely going to punish and you will not learn anything. Have fun and good luck.

thanks for the generic moral lesson but this is a graded assignment.

Is there a fancy all-in gambit that he might miss? I'll practice tactics as much as possible but im looking for a specific opening or strategy to study. I will be playing white.

another advantage i have is several people in the class know absolutely nothing about chess. He won't know my skill level.

Sorry dude, chess is not boxing, there is no way to sucker punch a master.  You both get to movepiece at a time and his pieces are going to beat your pieces - thats WHY he is a master, because he does not ever lose to 1300 players.  Just take your time, double check your moves, have fun, and make him work for it.

Graded for what?? Why the hell will you ever need to hold up a piece of paper and say, "hey, I beat a master when I really didn't deserve to!"

electricpawn

Maybe if the master's really drunk, but probably not even then.

Don't worry about trying to beat him.....you will not.  Play the opening that you know best, and really focus on not blundering away pieces.  I took a class many years ago and played in a similar simul against the master instructor, and he wiped us all out, including a couple of 1800+ players.  After my game, he told me that I had played "really well" which made me elated.  Probably because I did not hang any pieces, and tried to defend his attacks.  This showed him that I at least had some idea as to what was happening in the game.  It is very unlikely that you will be able to sucker him into a trap, though I suspect that he may try to sucker you into a few.  If you find that he has hung a piece, think very carefully before quickly grabbing it.  It may be checkmate on the next move.  Study tactics, tactics, and more tactics....and have fun !!

Just keep it simple, play for the long run and hope he makes the first mistake!

Chances are against you, but you never know! MAKE HIM THINK!!!
