No offense {Miachel}..But, I suspect, that your 'issue' here, to both chess, and maybe Life, in general, is a superficiality, in your approach!..{Ouch!}..

Otherwise - Given that you felt 'terrible' afterwards - It suggests, you didn't 'enjoy' the aesthetic 'after-glow' of your obviously committed endeavor.. and-or did poorly.

'Bullet'/ 1 minute games, as I see it.. Is like eating a sugary 'twinkie' snack - Simply because, eating something much more 'nutritious' was Too much of a bother. -- Also, if your 'terrible feeling' was due to, your trying to forget Other Problems.. {only You know} - That would suggest, perhaps.. Overdoing, the Escapism, angle.  0: .. Cheers, though

It would be interesting to learn what the average rating is hear on chess.com but you couldn't include all the time wasters who only make one or two moves befor running out of time!

I have a wife.

Sorry, but I think we are deviating from the primary topic.

I need some steps to overcome my bullet addiction before something serious happens.

I played 60 bullet games here and maybe over 120 games (5 hourly bullet arena tourneys) on lichess today.

Chess is addictive, and so is being online. Crappy news, silly videos on youtube, endless amounts of porn. Try this: https://getcoldturkey.com/

This program blocks the websites you add, for the time you want.

This seems like a good idea.

I could be doing more constructive things with my time instead of 8 hours each day playing bullet chess.  I could be going to the gym instead.

You could look for a wife that is attractive.

What sort of attractive? Gravitational?

You could get a program that will block the various chess sites.

You could also use an engine, report yourself, and get yourself banned.  Or, if you ask nicely, you can probably get yourself banned without using an engine.  Threatening to use an engine if you don't get banned will probably help, though.

Seriously, though, a browser plugin such as StayFocusd might be worth looking into.  You can set chess websites to be blocked permanently, or at certain times of day.  If you're too addicted, though, you're probably best avoiding online chess altogether for a while; maybe you can come back to it in a controlled manner in future.

Back in 2000 when Yahoo Games was new, I was addicted to bullet chess.   The venue was new and players were polite and all really enjoyed the games.  It was intoxicating and I played many 10s of thousands of games and spent most of my time outside of work online for over 1 year.  I was seriously addicted and it was hurting my personal.  What worked for me was to seek out a local chess club and only play live speed chess.  I found the interactions more rewarding as most online players aren't interested in any comaraderie but live players are.  I then found that playing online was far less appealing to me.   Of course, playing live chess will also curtail your overall playing because there is a much more limited window for playing with others.

I play on-line occassionally, but I don't get hooked like I used to.  It probably helps that my internet connection isn't very fast these days and my skills have deteriorated.

The first week offline is the hardest.

Good luck.

A) Read Epicurus. He teaches pleasure in moderation.

B) Play in front of a mirror. Look at yourself for a minute after each game.

C) Negotiate with your addiction. Indulge an hour of chess for an hour at the gym.

Hope any of this helps. Good luck!

I happen to come here. At this point I gotta say I've had this issue for a long time now. I think as a way to cope with reality and some other stuff we be online, watch tv and all that. Online chess (I mostly play 3 min) is compulsively addictive. I guess it's a way to kill time. It can be absolutely frustraiting and rewarding at the same time. But it's not hard to quit after you see there's not much a point to it. It's not for the sake of playing I claim, but trying to climb the ratings ladder what keeps me going. And although it's a good way to achieve it, it can be so slow. I'll try something else to get there now. And then, go for a walk, get bored watching a movie or just prowl. Good games.
