I need help with chess and need to know if this is true. 'It aint what you do its the way that you do it.. thats how you get results.' Maybe I have been playing chess the wrong way. Can someone help? My girlfriend was telling me that jazz was bs I said no its not.. but then I thought.. maybe she is right. Then I thought music and chess have little in common.. you can make a mistake improving in music. annie ross? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIiGAK903QU whatever

Are you asking about listening to music and playing chess, the connection between Jazz and chess, Or the question  'It aint what you do its the way that you do it.. thats how you get results.'  related to chess.

For playing chess and listening to music, I find as long the music does not distract you to much from the game, it should be fine. Jazz, classical and some other music can be good.

There's your problem. Chess is logic, visual logic. Chess is very similar to math. Chess is not the world of emotions, music, style, conversation, language nuances, human relations, cultural influences, magic, religion, compromises, or anything like that. A computer has none of those attributes and will whip you if you don't think logically and objectively and play your moves within the allotted time. If there's ever a domain where only *what* you do matters, chess is it. Your girlfriend must not be a very good chess player to not understand those basics.

JAZZ it up??  What KIND of jazz?Yell    Ragtime, Swing, Big Band, Be-Bop, Free style, Electronic, ??  Who do you want to talk about??  Parker, Coltrane, Monk, Ornette Coleman, Mingus, Cecil Taylor, Jackie McLean, Brubeck, Gil Evans??   I can't talk about jazz, my drug days are behind me. I can say this. The black man was in the trenches doing the work, while the white man was getting all the glory....Undecided...Miller, Goodman, James, Rich, Herman, Dorsey, Kenton.   When you play drums for Stan Kenton, you use HIS symbals, or you don't play. I would say the gold standard is to play drums for Count Basie. You don't play for the money. You play for bragging rights, and its Captain Bill to you. I got some Don Ellis, Rob MaConnell, Thad Jones, Zim Zimmerall, 3 military groups, Maynard Ferguson, couple other California outfits.
