jeremy silmans complete book of chess strategy

just purchased on amazon silman's complete book of chess strategy, has anyone read it? any thoughts?

Useful little book.  Kind of a little chess encyclopedia.  The title is a bit misleading though.  My copy lived in the bathroom for a few months...

really, i think silman is a great writer/instructer, but this is not one worth buying.  It is essentially an encyclopedia. Think of it this way, a writer doesnt increase his vocabulary by just reading the dictionary A-Z, but will use the dictionary as a reference. That is what i see this book as, a reference tool.

However i do highly recommend his endgame and reasses your chess books.  Those are far better in terms of what you can learn from them.

I don't consider myself properly qualified to evaluate a book like this, but, assuming that I remember correctly, I do feel capable of making one criticism of this specific Silman book (a criticism that I have posted before). The openings are arranged in alphabetical order instead of 1 e4 openings, 1 d4 openings, etc. This makes it harder to perceive things like: "If I play 1 d4 as White and reply to 1 e4 with 1 ... e5 as Black, then I don't need to know about the Sicilian."

Its not true, its your opinion.

Simplistic encyclopedic books can't be applied immediately, but hopefully set the framework for future learning.

Start up a thread on Danielle Steel novels.  He won't copy that text there.  That stuff's his favorite, along with Miley Cyrus music.  He twerks to it!

I read The Complete Book of Chess Strategy almost every day and it is the one book I always travel with. It is a great book for learning the fundamentals of chess. If you read it 1000 times, you will have learned a lot about chess, including the main lines of opening theory, which is difficult if you only copy bots. This book shows you the actual move orders that are known to be the traditional move orders. 

This is the best chess book in my opinion. No idea how (but not surprised) the average person feels otherwise. That's what life is always like for me. 

All I do these days is read this book, use its opening theory to put in Lichess and play games against proper theory coming back at me, and play puzzles. Playing bots is useless because they don't use proper theory, and playing real people (unless they are masters) is also useless as they don't use proper theory either. 

And just to reply to one of the answers above: reading a dictionary is precisely how to increase your vocabulary. 

If anyone is around 1500+ at chess, and knows real opening theory, please add me as a friend. It's hard to find anyone to play with. To me, any other game is a waste of time. I have been playing for 1 year.

Silman has great books. You can't go wrong.
