Just A Game

I'm impressed with the importance people put on chess. I started to write, "chess is a game for great and simple minds", when I realized what some would say to such a statement, as I too myself would be able to relate to such a remark. That remark would be: that no mind is simple, and to understand chess is a great accomplishment.

Well let us look at the individual player. Sometimes I get discouraged at the things that go on around the game and thus don't want to play. The thought I wish to dismiss is that that indeed makes me weak, and not of a fit mind even to "greatness". Finally I can relate to it myself because sometimes I sit down to play with focus and determination, only to realize that whatever importance my opponent believes is at stake, is false and that it is better not to try to speak to them, but to try to understand him.

This is where the game can go downhill, the misconception is realized, and again passed over. Maybe I lose, maybe I'm willing to win but under no circumstances am I about to believe that the importance is greater than the game itself. I wonder then what to do next, and am willing to throw my opponent a curve ball, but in the end I really hope my opponent will say good game. I really want to bring my A game ;)

Baseball is a game where eleven or so guys walk out on a big oddly-shaped field to chew tobacco, spit, and scratch themselves. Occasionally someone swings a wooden club but very rarely does he manage to hit anyone with it. The game ends whenever they feel like it, although they are encouraged to spend at least three hours chewing and scratching by lucrative contracts with beer companies and peanut farmers.

Because you didn't specify that your post had to be understood before people could comment on it?
