  Hollywood's a funny town.

I actually liked the movie and would see it again. I agree focused too much on his paranoia and schizophrenia and pissing people off. But it also shows symphathy for Fischer at times, especially for those who think Fischer was all crazy, which he wasnt. For example, the scene where he was talking to his sister over the phone when he was at their old apartment, and he was very frightened because the press at the airport, which they werent suppose to. I thought it was alright to end at game 6 seeing as how that was the best game of the championship.

Didnt like the ending though, they didnt have to mention the part where he got arrested in 1980, and I mean they could have shown footage of young Bobby Fischer

I will see it when I am able to and I am always dubious of movies reviews of 1. They do that all over IMDb and it really does not show the ability to critique and qualify a film is present in the reviewer. Few movies would actually ever deserve a 1 on a scale of 1 to 5, much less 1 to 10.

I would have given it a 3 out of 10 if it weren't for the "chess makes people insane" message. It really does portray chess badly, to the point where after the movie was over I felt it necessary to explain some positive aspects of chess to the people I watched it with, and to tell them about how Fischer wasn't so bad and that Spassky is a good man and not a sinister Russian tough guy. This is the type of movie it is, one that if you watch it with people who don't play chess you'll worry about what impression they're going to have about you, the game, and everyone who plays it. For thesse reasons I knocked it down from a 3 to a 1, because I feel it's not just a bad movie but that it also perpetuates a harmful message and stereotype.

Sure, but will a friendly dog make a fool out of the cold war, blame the jews, become the chess player of the century, and then die in isolation? Rob. You're my dad, and I love you, but you have no idea what you're talking about.

I saw the HBO documentary about Fischer and I loved it.

I thought that documentary was like a montage of other works, each of which had been done well. I was disappointed in the documentary. I plan to see Pawn Sacrifice Monday.

I can't wait for the sequel, "Knight Sacrifice".

News Flash: Some people paid to make a Hollywood biopic movie about an eccentric world chess champion, and they -gasp- exaggerated!

Yes a more accurate telling would have been more interesting to us rare chess enthusiasts. But the general public needs more.

I hear the movie neglected to go into the truth that Paul Nemenyi was Bobby's biological father (he definitely was). And neglected to show his post-championship life beyond perhaps a tidbit (I have not yet seen the movie).

I always wanted Nicholas Cage to play the role of Fischer, but Nick got too old.

I haven't seen any of the movies darn it. I dislike going to theaters and loath the idea of supporting Hollywood. Talk about an occupation bad for ones mental health. I especially hate how Americans hang onto every word and opinion of "the stars" who, for the most part, are only good at lying. all this talk makes me want to see them though. I wonder if I can see them on YouTube or something.

I saw the film yesterday. The quality of the drama was strong enough that it was easy to overlook most of the small errors of fact about Fischer and his chess.

One error, however, pained me. In game six of the World Championship, Fischer played the English, transposing into a line of the Queen's Gambit in which Spassky had no prior losses. The narrative said that Fischer had abandoned his cherished Sicilian Defense.

My desire to cheer the film through many scenes (Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" juxtaposed with Fischer listening to tapes of Herbert Armstrong was brilliant) gave way to an impulse to scream. Naturally, as a good chess player, however, I kept my emotions in check. The other two people in the theater did not hear a peep from me.

I wonder what Boris Spassky thought of the movie?

DrinkingLikeTal

He probably thought it stunk.

OP doesnt understand that the movie was never meant to appeal to chess players, but to mainstream media and box offices everywhere.

spassky was a good friend of fischer, so he is probably quite annoyed at a movie depicting his kind friend as an isdiot

I think that friendship developed in the wake of the 1972 championship.

Spassky standing up at the end of game 6 and clapping develops the story of that friendship, and is historically accurate. That's something important that the film got correct.
