I saw that film when it first came out. The funny thing is that I just realized that the guy who does the main Chess "Academy" on Chessmaster 11, Josh Waitzkin, is the real life kid from that film. I'd had wondered, from time to time, why they chose to brand their software around a mere IM, as opposed to someone the likes of an Anand or Magnus Carlsen. I suppose that their marketing team decided that the target audience of a beginner oriented chess game (especially one that has a console game version) would be more familiar with someone with their own youth oriented movie.

On another note, another chess themed movie that is rarely mentioned is the 1994 movie, "Fresh"   http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109842/

Hello Matthew,

I also enjoyed viewing Searching for Bobby Fischer.

Additionally, you may find, as I did, the film entitled "Knights of the South Bronx" entertaining as well as inspirational.

We can't have that. Next thing you know, someone will start singing "Waltzing Matilda."

I also highly recommend the book of the same title on which the movie is based.  It's rather different from the movie.  Both are good, just different.

The movie The Luzhin Defence is based on the novel The Defense by Vladimir Nabokov. Again, some license is taken with the movie, but both are good.

Knights of the South Bronx is a very inspiring movie even more so than Searching for Bobby Fischer and it shows how chess (movie style) changed people in real life.

If you happen to go to youtube you can watch the whole movie.  Someone put it on there in perfectly overlapping nine minute sections.
