Knights facing sideways or forwards?

So I notice a few people play OTB with their knights facing sideways.

It does kind of make them easier to recognise in profile but to me this looks wrong wrong wrong.

Knights should forwards and looking into the whites of the enemy's knights eyes.

What way do you face your knights?

ESP-918

Sides.

Because mostly I play blitz and it's much easier to grab them side ways and saves a lot of time.

Also I like sides, because when they are faced in front, they are giving their back of the head which is dangerous, just like in boxing 😉. It's to vulnerable. Side ways they are looking both ways and controlling g situation much better, so no one can "jump" them , they are ready if anything goes down.

Some people are super fussy about this. I don't care.

Nordlandia

Diagonally forward toward center or opponent.

Q-knight ~45° |  K-knight ~135°

Sideways. I think most of the people I play OTB do that too. But if someone wants to face them forward or at 45 degrees, it doesn't matter to me.

If playing OTB I think the knight should face forwards (unless your army is shy).
When displayed graphically (computer or on-line play) the knight looks better sideways.
Also, the chancellor looks better sideways. But the bulldog (in variant games) is fine in the forward position, both OTB and graphically.happy.png

It is each player's choice which way they want to face their knights.  Most of the people at the club I play at either face them forwards (from their perspective) or sideways in such a way that they face each other.  In other words, both of them looking at their own King and Queen.

I do neither.  I always set my Knights facing to my left.  So when I'm White, they are both facing towards the Queenside.  When I am Black, they are both facing towards the Kingside.

Tony Miles always faced his knight to the right

Nathan0001

I always thought facing the knights towards the king was the more common arrangement.

IMKeto

I turn em so they face each other.

Hmmm...knights facing backwards?

I never bother to check which direction I place my knights - any direction is ok as long as the knights fulfil their duties on the board.

I prefer to have them backwards just to trigger people.

I am liking this one from Nordlandia. although I would go for 315 degrees for the king-side knight for symmetry.

How about a 90% clockwise turn on each move for the queen-side knight and 90 degree anti-clockwsie on each turn for the king-side knight just to wrong-foot your opponent.

All is fair in love and chess.

I once played a guy who had little plastic googley-eyes glued onto his knights. It didn't help him. He dropped one of them in the opening.

MOtega

I always put my Knights facing towards the center at the beginning (queen-side knight looking right diagonally, king-side looking left diagonally). Then I keep this position as they move forward.

blueemu

Someone did an analysis of which grandmasters face their Knights in which direction. It's here on the forum somewhere.

I'm looking at the board for the FIDE 2022 world championship, game 5 with four knights still on the board (Magnus at the board thinking).   Both players have their knights facing their right.  I've always faced mine forward but will know fact them to the right, since it will obviously improve my game.  wink.png

Facing backwards, so it’s like it’s mooning them…
