I would try to get an i7 (8 cores) or at least an i5 (4 cores) processor. I have had good results with the intel processors when I want to use them for chess.
...Just thinking

Buy an i7 laptop with 16GB Ram, dvd drive, 256 GB SSD (for 7 men egtb), 1 TB hdd, I dont think there is a battery that will last for more than 2 hours if you set your chess softaware to 100% cpu usage. A heavy duty portable power would help.
I think you should buy a good tablet rather than a complete computer if Chess is all you want to do on it.
MacBook is an amazing computer. I use one myself.
But if you wish to go for Windows, then, Alienware is the way to go.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
As to the Mac suggestions, I said NO MACs I already hate them.
Let alone trying to make Windows work on a Mac. Don't see the point. Just get a Windows machine and I get my keyboard shortcuts, can use Tab to navigate menues can right click to start a new document inside any folder and on and on it goes.
As to the Chrome, I don't know of any chess programs that run on Chrome.
Does Chessbase and Hiarcs run on Chrome?
If so that's a definite possibility.
I'm going to look into Alienware, and any i7 laptop with 8 cores and 16gs of Ram.
Special thanks to the rest of you who stayed on subject.
The machine NOT to get is Dell. I have had Dell computers and they are poorly made. A suspect brand is Acer since I read that they also are poorly made. I now have an HP which I have found to be a very good, well made, value.
I don't understand why a laptop for chess has to be powerful at all.
Heck, my cell phone runs Stockfish at like 2500+. Maybe if you're an IM+ in ability, sure, you need the horsepower, but for us class players, Stockfish running on even an underpowered cell phone will outanalyze and outplay all of us (combined!)
I'm thinking of going for a dedicated chess computer too really for mobile reasons, but it's been hard to convince myself that I'm going to do better than my phone when I'm mobile. At home, the budget laptop is plenty powerful to run analysis (and fast, at that.)
What laptop would you buy if you were going to just do chess on it and your budget was up to $1200-?
I want long battery life and screen not under 12". It will used be unplugged a lot. Has to be new, not used.
Mac does not count because I got a MacBook Air recently, specifically for this purpose (Hiarcs Chess Exporere comes for Mac) and I absolutely hate it, can not get rid of it fast enough. So it's going...maybe even out the window.
So Windows suggestions only.
I was thinking Dell XPS or maybe something from IBM. Like that super light one that they make.
Thanks fellow chess players for your suggestions.
