Let's talk about the price of our chess sets here.

And I just bought a nice one (gold &Silver color) online which cost around 12 $ only (^_^)

I don't think I own a set that costs more than $20. I have a basic green vinyl roll-up board that I picked up from QBoutique for $10. Then I bought four sets of colors, black, white, orange, and green. Each color was $5 each. My first set was one that was probably from Target or something that my husband and I bought while we were dating. It's a little wooden set that fits inside a case meant to look like a book on your shelf. The other set I have is my magnetic travel set. It's my favorite. And it only cost $12 on Amazon.

My uncle has a glass chess set. I remember thinking it was so cool as a kid. But they are very difficult to play with considering most of them are clear vs frosted, which is hard to distinguish.

my mother just bought me a handmade chess set from India. It's a small fold up board, about a square foot when opened. I love it for all its imperfections.

And my favorite, 3 1/2" Jacques of London bought from USCF around 1997 for $1400. I don't have a link to this one, so I'll attach a picture.

I recently got two nice sets. One is a wood set with a 3.75" King, 1.625" diameter base, with an extra Queen in each color, that will fit well on the standard 2.25" square standard silicone or vinyl board. It's good and heavy and nicer than the older, boxed away in my basement somewhere, $200+ set from the '90's. I feel very comfortable with the site-lines down the diagonals, etc, when playing with this set on the 2.25" green silicone board (I played for years on the cheap, green, vinyl USCF boards and green feels natural to me now) I got to go with it and it will be the one I use in OTB tournaments in the future. This one was $99 here last month but "unavailable" now:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002XHLCE6
It was sold on Amazon by "The Chess Store" which currently carries it for $129.99:

The other set, also with one extra queen in each color, i got is a heavily weighted 4.25" King, 1.85" diameter based high-polymer "Nero" set with a very pretty faux-wood pattern, which fits best on a 2.375" squares board (I managed to find a green mousepad one online at "Wholesale Chess"), is very hard to break and so I use it with my 8 year-old nephew, etc. here for $59.95 here:

Beware about cheap chess sets on ebay. I got one that I thought was a steal and someone on here has just told me its labelled wrong.
If you can't return it through the seller (I think "defective" covers it under PayPal's protection policies), you can always put stickers with the right letter over the current ones.
I would wait until attending the chess club before buying anything else. Often national organizations or Amazon, etc, have low priced sets (3.25" to 3.75" Kings) plus 2.25" square roll-up board combinations with or without clock. The members of the club should know about them.

Yes exactly it's very difficult to consider the difference between the two squares color!!

This is the only wooden chess set I have, my wife bought it for me in 1999, she was only 21. 15,000 pesetas, would be like 100 euros, 125 dollars, 80 sterlings.

I have this travel board (but it looks pretty nice, wooden and matches my pieces. I require the letters and numbers for swift translations of online play. https://www.amazon.com/Chess-Set-Tournament-Staunton-Complete/dp/B000SOGHQ4/ref=pd_sbs_21_6?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000SOGHQ4&pd_rd_r=98H7JGX0EZPQ60QY04NP&pd_rd_w=sonPu&pd_rd_wg=pgeMF&psc=1&refRID=98H7JGX0EZPQ60QY04NP
and I believe I have this exact set of pieces already mentioned:
They (board and pieces) came in one box, one set. Cost was around 50 or 60 dollars on ebay, got it from an eastern european seller at the time, years ago.
I would like an even more beautiful set, but my cats are all over the place, not declawed (won't do that to 'em) and so I worry about an expensive polished set!
The ever popular Dubrovnik (same as Chessbazaar sheesham) is for less than $100 at
chessgamesshop.com
as "Dubrovnik Royal" wood, of course.
Hi, I was looking at a Miletus Staunton 4"king set in Padouk and Box at Staunton Castle, $467, but then found the same set advertised at "Chess Magazine Online" https://www.chessmagazineonline.com/collections/frontpage/products/miletus-series-premium-staunton-4-luxury-chess-set-in-ebony-wood-and-box-wood
for $263 ( their header description says ebony but its clearly padouk)'
They say "Most of Wooden Chessmen that appear on various online selling websites or stores, in the whole World, have their origin in Amritsar, India. The Website owners mostly buy from Amritsar and display on their selling media; whereas we, belonging to Amritsar, sell our own quality products produced in our own manufacturing unit in Amritsar, India"
I wondered if anyone has bought from this Company? Seems a good deal if its' legit
