Life of a King and Chess.Com

I just finished watching Life of a King staring Cuba Gooding, Jr. and I am confused.  What’s the story behind the scene where Eugene takes the kids to their tournament and are surprised to find out players are recording their moves on computers?  I’ve been in the chess scene on and off for over twenty years and have never seen anyone anywhere ever play a tournament under these conditions.  Has anyone else seen this or was it just made up for the movie to ad some drama?  Secondly, why are the computers running chess.com?!  Wasn’t this whole movie set in the 1990‘s?  Chess.com didn’t even exist and the world wide web was in it’s infancy!  I’m supposed to believe that these people thought it would be better to record the games on an expensive, old, giant, desktop computer instead of a 10 cent pencil and a sheet paper?!

It totally ruined my suspension of disbelief and wrecked an otherwise enjoyable and realistic movie.

I guess there is a term for this it's called "product placement".  That's when a company pays to get their brand inserted casually into movies and television shows.  What's next a Super Bowl®©™ ad?

Where did you even find this movie?  I've had a hard time finding it and last time I checked it wasn't on Netflix.

I'm not an expert on tournament rules but I believe the Monroi is the only electronic device approved by FIDE for recording moves at tournaments. PCs are definitely forbidden because they can possibly be used for cheating.

I can't believe anyone would sell out like that. Very poor taste.

Speaking of taste, I'm drinking a very tasty Coca-Cola™ right now. It's so refreshing... my life is complete.

My neighborhood video rental store.  They have managed to stay in business despite Netflix by offering superior customer service along with an aging local population resistant to change.  They have a wide variety of obscure movies and the clerks are very knowledgeable.

I used to drink soda and developed diabetes as well result.  Now I use ACCU-CHEK to monitor my blood sugar.  ACCU-CHEK, the first and only blood glucose reader with a built in insulin calculator.  ACCU-CHEK.

I used to drink soda and developed diabetes and use accu-chek. (much simpler!)

It reminds me, watching the latest episode of the CBS series Under The Dome monday I was a bit exasperated when the characters kind of show us their Surface Pro Tablet with the Windows 8.1 metro screen and Outlook so that we don't miss it's nice features and the Microsoft logo on it. Obviously it's a kind of marketing stunt, and strangely the Surface Pro 3 is now available for sale!
