Live chess with handicap

I have many friends I'd like to play live chess against who are tangibly worse at chess than I am. I'd like to be able to give them some sort of handicap to make the games more even. These are just casual, unrated games. Is there any way I can play with uneven times (give them 10 minutes and me 5 minutes) or uneven pieces (play with a missing pawn/knight/rook)? I see that I can set custom times in live chess, but there's no option to give a different amount of time to each player.

Is this feature something that is likely to be available on the site? I'd like to play games with family/friends online but the games would only be competitive/interesting if we could have different time controls for white/black and/or piece odds. Any news on this would be great, thanks.

I'm going to add my voice to the fray, YES PLEASE!

Of course, it makes no sense to rate handicap games, but it would be awesome if it would be a separate handicap nonetheless.

Looking at high level handicap games could be, I assume, very instructive as well.

This is something me and my friends would really appreciate, both material odds in witch the one giving the odds can remove pieces and time handicap where you can choose to have less time yourself.

DrCheckevertim

sounds like a good idea

You could get a 5 minutes v. 10 minutes by waiting 5 minutes before your first move, hence not having that amount of time on your clock.

True.... but who would want to do that?

Just play an unrated 10 min game and resign after 5 mins, if you haven't won by then. there you go, handicap chess

We already do that, but it doesn't work very well, especially when both players are in timetrouble.

GetRichBrothers

Any word on whether this has changed? This is an old thread, but I'd like to try this with a friend.

Hookeste

does one of the other sites do this?

antisunechess

there are chess apps that do that

Alphagonezero

Simply agree to gambit a piece before you start. The piece must be forfeited within say 10 moves

maybe waste some tempos in the beginning, so that your opponent has better development

I'd really like to see this feature too.

Ways I’ve handicapped myself:

1. Play blindfolded

2. remove one of your pieces from the board at the start

3. allow someone to “bughouse” their queen up to three times in a game if captured

4. write down every move and allow them unlimited redos

5. I play a tight time control and the opponent doesn’t

6. I tell opponents my plans and what I’m thinking candidly while playing

7. Liquor (now, some players, like Alekhine, consider sobriety the handicap, so you have to know yourself and your playing style)

8. I try to win while keeping as many pieces as I can on my back rank. Won a few games with a knight and bishop this way

9. others I’m sure
