I'm looking for someone who would be willing to do some chess tutoring/general playing via snail mail correspondence, on behalf of my friend, Binh Nguyen. He's passionate about chess and wants to improve his game. I like to be upfront about things, so I'll say first that Binh is serving in prison in California, and he's been there for most of his adult life. It's a long story, so I'll shorten it and say simply that he was young and stupid, and he did not hurt anyone, nor intend to. He's accepted that he did wrong, and is, if not *content*, precisely, resigned to his situation and does his best to use his time to improve himself. Binh is, believe it or not, a really nice guy, and he's very much into chess. He's beaten all the guys on his yard and the next yard, and tends to win his games and most of the tournaments they have in there. He's always looking to learn more, and wants to be challenged. While I can play, I'm not at all good, and he asked if I would try and find him someone to play against that will be a challenge, and that he can learn from. I figured this would be the place to start looking. I realize that coaches normally charge for lessons, and rightly so. I teach (riding, actually) and I agree that the ability to impart knowledge is worth being paid for. But, for obvious reasons, Binh doesn't have much in the way of money, and what he does have goes towards keeping himself in food and toiletries. If someone with some coaching experience could find it in their heart to take him on as a charity student/correspondence chess playing partner, it would make a real difference in his life. I know times are tough financially, so I would be willing to donate stamps and envelopes to the cause.
Please contact me if you're interested. And even if you aren't, thank you for looking.
I've played a lot of games with a few prisoners over the years. I always enjoy the games and the correspondence. I am willing to take part, if he doesn't mind playing vs. a Class B player from Canada.
